Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The staff of the hotels where I stayed did not even know of the existence of this museum, and it was great. I suggest visiting before going to the archaeological sites, but you can also go afterwards and evaluate how much you learned. The museum gives a good overview of the history of Peru’s occupation, which is very useful as a background of your visit to the Trujillo area.
The museum looks very much like a South-American public university museum (old, poor, in decay), but the collection is amazing and the curation is very well constructed. I saw pieces here that were way more impressive than most of the ones in the well-maintained Huaca museums

I was in this museum several years ago, but enjoyed my visit this time too. I could not tell if there were significant additions or reductions. Lots of interesting stuff to see here and we’ll displayed by societies both before and after the Incas. I particularly enjoyed the Chimu and Nazca displays.

This little museum is run by the National University of Trujillo. It is divided into 6 sections displaying the hunters and gatherers of 120,000 years ago through to the Chimu and Inca periods, There are some beautiful pottery displays as well as many other artifacts.
It could be very interesting if there were captions in English - a great opportunity for volunteers to translate. The Google phone translation was pretty useless.

We tried to visit on Tuesday, Dec 19, 2017. Opening time (in theory) is until 4:30 PM. We got there at 2 PM. Door is closed. We knock. A bemused doorman opens.
"What do you want?"
"We'd like to visit the museum"
"It is closed"
"But it says right here on the door it's open until 4:30. It' 2 now"
"Everybody left for an emergency meeting some place else"
Next day, Wednesday, Dec 20, 2017, we're back. It's 1:30 PM. Door is closed. We knock. Another doorman, even more bemused that the one from the previous day, opens.
"What do you want?"
"We'd like to visit the museum"
"It's closed"
"But it's 1:30 PM, it should be open until 4:30"
"Not today. You have to come early"
"But it is early, it's three hours before closing time"
"Everybody left for an emergency meeting some place else"
"We were told the same thing yesterday. Can we speak to a manager?"
"The manager is gone. There's only a secretary here, and he won't speak to you."
"But why is the museum closed so early? It says right here on the door it should be open until 4:30."
"You know, Christmas time is like that"
End of our little Trujillo Christmas tale...

A walk through the ages of Peruvian history as depicted by pottery. Exhibits from the earliest settlers through to the Incas. We used a local guide which was very helpful to point out details but also got and English information sheet from the front desk. This is just a 2-3 minute walk from the main square and very much worth a visit. We enjoyed in immensely

This museum is worth visiting to give you an overview of the different pre-Inca cultures that existed in this area of the Northern Coast. But it's much more interesting and worthwhile to visit the sites themselves if you have the time.

The casa is a real charmer. Murals of Venice decorate the courtyard walls. The dioramas are sweetly homemade looking, but very accessible for school kids and the ceramics as good as you will see at Lorca. It is the only museo that gives a broad view of the lives of the ordinary people as opposed to the war and death culture of the upper classes of Moche, Inca, etc

We took break from the hot sun and toured this small musem. There is a lot of beautiful artifacts, explainations in both Spanish/English. They also offer wifi here, which is somewhat hard to find in Trujillo.

This was a pretty good place to go, although nothing special. You can get through it in about 1/2 to 3/4 hour. It concentrates on the northern precolumbian civilizations, and has some good representations of the Chavin and Moche.

This museum is closed for the pandemic. I knocked and a kind security guard still answered though! he explained that it's closed for the pandemic but may be open next year.

How much is the entry fee? Can you walk there easily from Plaza Mayor?

I think it is 10 or 12 Soles --- it is an easy 6 to 10 min walk from Pl Armas -- nice museum but signage in Spanish
