The Field of Mars had beautiful gardens that made an impression. The Eternal Flame commemorating heroes who lost their lives was the first in Russia. The flame was delivered to the Tomb of the unknown soldier in Moscow's kremlin. The bright colorful flowers gave a presence of peace.

Our tour bus drove by and sort of slowed down for us to look at the park. Interesting in its purpose and it is a nice park - but nothing mind-blowing (which is why I suppose we didn't stop....

On a sunny day it is a nice walk on your way to the summer gardens. Locals like to hang on the grass. In the middle is an everlasting flame for the victims of the Russian Revolution.

Not really worth going out of your way to see this area, but if you're going somewhere and can pass through it then walk the way. Seeing the Spilt Blood Church in the distance over beautiful trees is a bonus.

This park, with its memorial to those who fell during the Revolution, is a somewhat sombre place. It is impossible to visit here without thinking about what the revolution meant to most Russians so it is a special place. Just a simple memorial instead of all those grand, imperial statues.

The field of Mars is named for the Roman God of War. It has an Eternal Flame in the center and the flame was the 1st in Russia. We found the field on our way to the Church on Spilt Blood. It is not an attraction that I would go out of the way to see but rather explore on... More

I was expecting something grander, something more spectacular, but instead what I saw was more sombre, sober and simplistic. There is a simple eternal flame at the centre of a semi-enclosed space inside the field which has sandy paths leading to its middle. There are engraved stones dedicated to the fallen around the flame. Apart the actual things that constitute... More

The history behind this is what makes it special. The memorial itself is not as impressive as most others in St. Petersburg but the significance is poignant. Lovely to see in the snowy winter months. Nice to use as a walk through between attractions.

Nice to see, but unless you have a link, not essential. Like most eternal flames in any city, more poignant if you have a memory to share

It's a strange place: large field with the eternal fire in the center and graves around it surrounded by lots of lilacs. But I adore it in spring! When all those lilacs are in bloom, their smell is everywhere, it's warm and the sun is shining! From this place you also have a fantastic view of Church of the Savior... More
