About
The legendary Alexandrinsky Theatre, fully titled as the Russian State Academic A.S. Pushkin Drama Theatre, is the oldest national theatre in Russia. Established in August, 30 1756, by Peter the Great’s daughter Empress Elizabeth, it became the common ancestor of all future Russian theatres, so the date it was founded on is recognised as the Birthday of professional theatre in Russia.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Designed by Carlo Rossi, named Alexandrinsky in honour of Alexandra Fyodorovna −wife of Tzar Nikolai I− and a baroque masterpiece of world architecture protected by UNESCO. If you enjoy ballet try to get tickets for a performance, unfortunately we could only get tickets for "The Raven"
directed by Nikolay Roshchin, but this play by Gozzi might had been a little too much.

The Alexandrinsky has mini-Bolshoi vibes, has a beautiful garden out the front and balcony to sip some champagne on. It's a relatively cheaper theatre than the Bolshoi and Mariinsky so I recommend spending the money to get great seats and see the ballet as it should be seen! We sat in the front row of the Tsar's box and what an experience! Made the whole show feel like it was being performed to us.

The theatre itself is a fantastic building and very well decorated inside. The performance of Swan Lake was absolutely amazing and we had great seats. During the interval we had a glass of champagne and as it was such a lovely evening weather-wise we could take this out onto the large balcony area. They had a small programme which was available in English and was much cheaper to buy if you had Russian currency although they did take Euros and US Dollars. The performance was something that everyone should experience at least once in their life. Highly recommended.

The Alexandrisky Theater is a beautiful neo-classical building located at the end of Architect Rossi Street and in front of Ostrovski Square. In fact, you can see this main facade from the square. Very nice.

I really enjoyed visiting this theatre with my husband. The building itself is stunning architecturally and is well kept. The performance that we saw was the Swan Lake ballet and it was captivating.

As someone who has never been interested in ballet before, this was an amazing experience.
The scenery, dancers and music were unbelievable. whilst in Russia we wanted to visit the ballet. We were very lucky that the performance that night was Swan Lake

The theater is so beautiful! I was seated next to two ladies who had attended Swan Lake Ballet a few months earlier at Lincoln Center in New York. We all thought this production was terrific. We very much enjoyed the entire evening. I had booked my ticket from the Oceania cruise line , as I was on a Baltic Cruise. My husband did not want to attend a ballet. It was possible for me to go alone and the entire evening was thrilling .

An evening of ballet here was included in our Tauck tour. We had wonderful seats on the main floor for the performance of Swan Lake. The theater is beautiful although it was rather difficult to find our seats as signage was minimal. Also, I would hate to be in this building if there was a fire as it took quite a while to exit at the end of the evening. But that is something difficult to fix as this building is very old.

A brilliant performance of the Nutcracker. Lots of staff to help. Signage to facilities could be improved though.

Tickets are easy to buy online. Our seats were good. The theatre is beautiful. Coats can be left in a cloakroom & many ladies changed their shoes. Cheap programmes in Russian & English were available. The orchestra & dancers were fantastic.
