Beautiful theater, poor ballet (Romeo and Juliet)
Well, we were hesitating to leave the place from the beginning, since the first part of Romeo and Juliet.
Romeo couldn’t really jump, experienced difficulties lifting Juliet, other dancers were not synchro, it looked like a total panic on stage.
The second act was much better, there was simple choreography and it was acceptable.
Still bravo to Mercutio, the performer was full of energy. Bravo to Juliet, who was light like a feather, despite some little mistakes. To the priest, he had the style, posture and expression someone would expect from Russian ballet.
Being a ballet’s lover, I would never come back, this performance was way below expected standards, especially for a place like Hermitage’s theater that I would expect being one of the top. In my opinion, Hermitage being a touristic place, they take advantage from people travelling to St Petersburg to fill the theater. Not sure any local ballet lover would come.
Have to say that the theater itself is small, beautiful and cozy, nice to visit.

well, at least we had a good laugh. Dancers forgot the choreography in the front row, and the prince came late, TWICE😂. Better to spend more on Marinskyy ballet tickets and see good quality ballet:)

We went to see a performance of Swan Lake at this theatre. The theatre is rather lovely. It is quite small so you would always get a good view. The performance was very good (the principal dancers were brilliant and the orchestra was excellent).

The performance was very successful. However entering the Hermitage Theater was a disaster. We were blocked by a mass of asian tourists who were very rude . The entrance door is very narrow which made it even moren difficult to enter.

We watched Swan Lake at the Theatre. The ballet performance was excellent. The Hall is beautiful but not as impressive as many other theatres in Europe. If you are serious about watching the performance you have to arrive really early as it is free seating. We arrived half an hour before the performance and the only seats left were the few on the side right next to the stage, only about 3/4 of the stage was in our sight. There are chances that you have to tolerate behavior of some of the audience who obviously were from group tour and demonstrated little interest in the performance. Do not bring a camera as you will be compelled to leave it at the cloak room. I was worried that something might happen to your camera, worse still I did see people taking photo with their phone without any intervention. But I have to say the performance was great.

A very nice performance. The layout of the theater is such that essentially everyone has a good seat.

Good theater with beautiful interiors. You feel vip as seating is limited. Only you should go bit early as it is free seating. Ballet was beautiful.

On my recent trip to St Petersburg I had the pleasure of attending a performance of Swan Lake in the Hermitage Theatre. I enjoyed every minute of it, but must say the best seats are in the back, that was where I was sitting. So come early.

Fantastic show in an intimate theater. Tips: go early, at least an hour before the start which is usually 7:30. The seats are unnumbered and side seats may be poor. Tour groups show up and take a lot of seats. Also, do not purchase a deal with dinner before since you have to go early. There are plenty of nice restaurants around you can eat at afterwards. Plenty of taxis to catch afterwards but don’t pay more than 500 Rubles.

Saw swan lake ballet which was excellent but the theater sold too many tickets and there wasn’t enough seats for everyone to sit as there are no assigned seats. We were squished in like sardines which made for a very bad bad experience. I paid a lot to money to see this ballet. Felt that the Hermitage was more worried about the money that they are making and not the customers experience! Go elsewhere and see a ballet where there are assigned seating.

Is this as touristy as some reviews suggest? What makes a ballet touristy anyway?

It is quite touristy, but the building and area is so iconic that you expect it to be busy. Seeing a ballet in Russia in the Hermitage is what makes it special not necessarily the ballet, particularly if you don't like ballet: which is the case with me. However I can say I saw swan lake at the hermitage.
