Beautiful theater, poor ballet (Romeo and Juliet)

Well, we were hesitating to leave the place from the beginning, since the first part of Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo couldn’t really jump, experienced difficulties lifting Juliet, other dancers were not synchro, it looked like a total panic on stage.

The second act was much better, there was simple choreography and it was acceptable.

Still bravo to Mercutio, the performer was full of energy. Bravo to Juliet, who was light like a feather, despite some little mistakes. To the priest, he had the style, posture and expression someone would expect from Russian ballet.

Being a ballet’s lover, I would never come back, this performance was way below expected standards, especially for a place like Hermitage’s theater that I would expect being one of the top. In my opinion, Hermitage being a touristic place, they take advantage from people travelling to St Petersburg to fill the theater. Not sure any local ballet lover would come.

Have to say that the theater itself is small, beautiful and cozy, nice to visit.

...it would seem that the tourists that have ruined so many people's ballet experiences are reining themselves in and are starting to learn a bit of etiquette. The educational campaigns to raise the standards of their tourists must be working in China. It's nowhere near as bad as some of the other reviewers' experiences.

Audience aside, I had the best time at my first ballet performance. Being a performer myself and having seen many productions of different theatre and musical performances, this production of Swan Lake is of a great quality and it was a thoroughly enjoyable performance. There are some weak links in the company but the ones who matter - both the male and female leads - were absolutely captivating. The orchestra was also impeccable and must have done Tchaikovsky proud.

Back to the overall experience. I must point out that it wasn't just the Chinese tourists that were talking and taking photos during the performance. Kids and I think some locals were equally distracting. I think the venue has the responsibility to monitor the usage of phones and talking and dragging chairs and moving during the performance. If it's an issue for so many people, it is disgraceful for the venue to continue to turn a blind eye, particularly if it affects the audience's experience of the integrity of the performance.

We were too late to get tickets for the ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre so decided to see Swan Lake at the Hermitage Theatre. Tickets were expensive and our experience was very different from the ballet in London. First, we could not find the entrance to the theatre despite knowing where it was - there is no proper sign with the theatre name. When we did find it, we were able to leave our coats and make our way to the auditorium. The interior was lovely - a very small theatre with a tiny orchestra pit at the front. The seats were benches arranged in rows with quite a difference I. Height between the rows and plenty of leg room. However there were no seat numbers so it was find a seat where you could. We chose the second to back row as this had the infinitely preferable row of upholstered high back chairs, which offered some support to your back. There were no programmes so no idea who was dancing or which ballet company. Despite recorded requests not to use cameras during the performance, lots of the tourists, particularly but not solely Asian tourists, took constant photos and videos. It was very distracting and annoying for people keen on ballet. People also went in and out of the auditorium throughout the performance although as we were near the back we were not really inconvenienced by this. It was a very different evening from the one we were expecting especially as it was so expensive! However, we did enjoy it.

This is the biggest disappointment. I’m not a sophisticated spectator, I love the theater, but this is my second time coming to the ballet. The first time I was at the Mariinsky Theater, where I really liked it, the second time I decided to go to the Hermitage. I really wanted to visit this particular hall, located in such an amazing place. But I didn’t even think about the fact that in the Hermitage in the very center of St. Petersburg one could experience such horror. If I liked the performance of the soloists, and I think as a spectator, then the corps de ballet is just some kind of dancing. Have they been to at least one rehearsal together?! It's a complete awkward out of sync. It's not pleasant to watch. This is the first money spent on the theater (5500 rubles!), which I regretted.
By the way, the hall is beautiful, atmospheric, BUT show mercy to your spectators, replace the sagging seats, otherwise, in addition to aesthetic torture, physical torture will be added.
I regret that, like some spectators, I did not leave after intermission. And yes! You shouldn’t talk about video effects in the poster if you mean static holograms on the walls, this is not serious for modern technologies.

We were on September 8 at the ballet dancers' concert "Ballet Rhapsody". It was a shame for the theater. Heavy tensors, for whom it is difficult to even make a jump.
Who misses performances? Nobody? How can you sell tickets for such terrible quality?

Saw swan lake ballet which was excellent but the theater sold too many tickets and there wasn’t enough seats for everyone to sit as there are no assigned seats. We were squished in like sardines which made for a very bad bad experience. I paid a lot to money to see this ballet. Felt that the Hermitage was more worried about the money that they are making and not the customers experience! Go elsewhere and see a ballet where there are assigned seating.

The show was glorious, however My husband and i had a terrible experience. The entire theatre was packed with chinese tourist, who took pictures and filmed the entire show infront of the entire theatre working crew. Flashes the entire performance celphone screens on, the entire performance interrupted by hands up with cameras and celphones. I paid a lot of money and was really expecting a nice experience and it was horrible. In moscow ballet however, things were different, the working crew took actions against people disturbing. Never again, total waist of my money and time horrible experience.

The Hermitage Theater is incredible, the orchestra and ballet were wonderful to see. The tickets however are too expensive for the experience and there are not assigned seats or ushers. As a result there was a large part of the audience was Asian and could not have been more rude. Without anyone there to enforce proper theater etiquette the ballet was difficult to watch. People taking photos and speaking throughout the entire show. People getting up and leaving, kids crying. It is a real shame not more is done to protect the work of the dancers and musicians. I would not recommend for the price of the tickets.

We visited a performance of the Swan Lake ballet in this small theater. It turned out that this theater is too small for this ballet: the dancers have hardly enough room on the stage to perform their art and the orchestra plays as if they are in the Mariinski Theater: much too loud and not subtile. It was a waste of our money ( € 95,-). The benches are not comfortable for the time you have to spend in the theater. The pauses between the different parts are very short to drink your coffee in between. Needs improvement!

Watching the Swan Lake performance at the Hermitage Theater was indeed the cherry on top of our tour in St. Petersburg. Its interior had really nice ambience and everyone in the audience was dazzled by the professional ballet dancers. Overall it was really a great experience!
