This has been a temple for close to or about 1,100 years. It was originally built under the order of Emperor Liu Yan of the Southern Han Dynasty. Since my 2017 visit, construction seems to have been completed on the main building. There are many Buddha-related works of art throughout the property. For a few minutes, I watched the prayer services and chanting which were taking place. Being a solemn place of worship, I’ll rate it as Excellent, but I have seen nicer Buddhist temples.

I walked passed the main entrance many times before realizing that if I walk up the narrow alley, it leads to the beautiful Dafo Temple. This is very close to Being Lu and is essntially in the Beijing Road Shopping Area. Solemn prayers were taking place during my visit, with many locals and a few tourists praying. A beautiful place of worship.

The Dafo Temple was quite popular as we were exploring the Beijing Lu area. We saw a bunch of people around the place and decided to explore. The Temple was nice and rather peaceful. The main building looks very grand and you will see a ton of beautiful/ornate statues inside. Its a pity we went in the early evening, else would have liked to see it at night when its looks really stunning, we're told.

This temple seems to go under the names Dafo Temple (name used on TripAdvisor), Great Buddha Temple (two signs at the main entrance, photos attached), Grand Big Buddha Temple (used on pamphlets, photo attached), and Big Buddha Temple (used by some online info providers). The main entrance of this Buddhist temple is located on a side street (Huifu East Road, 惠福东路), about 100 metres in from the Beijing Lu shopping/pedestrian street. The opposite side entrance is across the street from GrandBuy Department Store.
Records show it first existence sometime during the Five Dynasties period (907-960), thus making it over 1,000 years old. Over the years it burned down once and destroyed with a change of dynasties, but it was always rebuilt. The most recent renovation of the temple was completed in January 2016.
During my tour of the temple grounds, I believe that about 80% of the people in attendance were praying. There was also a group of Buddhist monks praying and chanting. It was very impressive watching the majority of the attendees practicing Buddhism. I too put my hands together to respect their prayers and tradition.
The grounds are home to a very large and old looking tree, which is said to be about 350 years old.
As another TripAdvisor reviewer mentioned, I too am surprised how few write-ups there are here. Is it possible that most reviewers search by the temple signage English names, and don’t get directed to the Dafo Temple name?

Visited Beijing road in Guangzhou around 2pm and started exploring the market. I felt market is mostly for food, cloths and shoes. Was pretty much exhausted and explored this Dafo temple. You really have to find out this temple. Its not visible upfront on road.
Its very clean and pleasant environment when you enter the temple. You might want to check timings of the temple before visiting. It was great place to relax after shopping.
The near by market is having lot of food related items so its bit smelly at the entrance. However its not a problem inside temple.
Worth visiting once.

Dafo Temple, or the temple of big Buddha, is a revamped sanctuary right at the heart of Guangzhou. A close witness of Chinese history, it was last destroyed and almost demolished during the Cultural Revolution. The current complex, although largely a reconstructed version, is still encompassing and worth a visit. The illuminated facade is a big tourist draw.

The Dafo temple is absolutely stunning and inside they have a huge vegetarian buffet filled with the most delicious food. We are vegan so our tour guide took us here for lunch and we fell in love. All of the items that contain dairy or eggs are clearly marked in English so it was very easy for us to eat. Just make sure you don’t take more than you can eat, as it’s frowned upon to leave food on your plate.

During the day,, you might as well walk past this Temple, without noticing. But at night it is just WAOW! They have done an awesome job restauring the building facade, all the sculptures, the lightings. And the you can visit for free, so do not miss out. Once you cross the frontage you can linger in the backyard, it is so loaded with history.

My hotel is in Jinghong so I just caught the #4 bus right up to the place. It was a way to save money which was good since it cost me 170 rmb entrance fee. That includes a little open minibus ride to the top of the mountain. Once on the top you can walk back down and see all the sights on the way. I was a little disappointed that you weren't allowed to go up to the main monastery. It's a nice way to spend a half day out and see some interesting things.

I am somewhat surprised that Dafo Temple has received little attention on Tripadvisor. I visited the temple on a Tuesday when some sessions were going on. It was quite fascinating to see people practicing Buddhism. The temple has a nice vibe to it, and moreover free of charge. Can't go wrong with this one.

I wrote a review about the Dafo Temple that I went to but somehow it got put into the wrong place. It's the DafoTemple in Jinghong, Xishangbana. not in Guangzhou. Can it be moved to the correct city?
