The Pearl River flows through the middle of Guangzhou. It is similar to the Sumida River in Tokyo, but the river is quite wide. Skyscrapers stand on both sides, and I think it is very romantic at night (unfortunately, I wandered around during the day).

Light pollution, water pollution as well as rancid smell at the confluence of unchecked commercial actions has made, we are sure - what was once a beautiful part of South China - a sorry story. Come here to see what unchecked human activities can result. Bring with you a mask.

Walking or jogging on the walkways adjacent to the Pearl River, or riding on its waters, are great ways of enjoying the serenity. The area close to Canton Tower is especially beautiful at night when lit up.

I watched the spectacular light show from both sides of the Pearl River. It was a great celebration of China's 70th birthday. The streets were crowded on both sides of the river.

The Pearl River with a length of 2200 km is in third place in China. It begins at the confluence of four small mountain rivers, and the mouth is located 70 km from Guangzhou on the northern coast of the South China Sea. There is a well-maintained embankment where you can enjoy beautiful views.

We had a long walk from the Sun-Yat Sen University law campus to the Canton Tower. It is refreshing walking by the water, looking at the boats, bridges, and just people-watching.

The skyline is enchanting, that is the best thing. The smell of river is enough to faint someone with no mask.

The Pearl River is famous in Guangzhou and quite neat and clean. The sights along the river at night look amazing. A nice place to walk around along the path.

I stayed at the hotel near the Pearl River, so i walked to the river at night.
There're only few restaurant, shops and night clubs on the riverside.
So the people walking around there were mainly tourists.
The night view was just average, not that beautiful.
I recommend to go take a little walk here for just killing time at night if your hotel is not so far.

We took the subway to Canton Tower and started our walk from there. With our 24 hrs subway pass at 20 yuan each, we could also ride the Guangzhou Tram and its terminal station is at Canton Tower. This tram is especially useful for sightseeing along the river as it covers a long distance. The skyline of the opposite Zhujiang New Town from Canton Tower is lovely. One can cross the Pearl River from Zhujiang New Town(Guangzhou Opera House, Guangzhou Library) to Canton Tower using the APM.
This area is a must do for tourist at night as the light and breeze will enable one to enjoy the modern Guangzhou especially with vast walking space.
We were fortunate to be able to catch the last train back to People Park station. The timings for first and last trains are posted near the exit of the subway station.

Hi, I can only answer your question regarding HK and Macau. As I only visited Guangzhou twice and Shenzhen once, so I don’t know much about these two places. I was born in Macau and go back there once a year. A lot has changed over the past couple of years in Macau, especially Taipa where lots of new hotels with casinos are built. For Macau Island, the historical sites are the Facade of São Paulo and Monte Fort nearby as well as the A- Ma Temple.
For HK, the main attraction is the Victoria Harbour, the Peak with the ride on the Peak Tram, however it’s under renovation for a few months. The tram takes you round the HK island from Western part to Eastern part. It’s the cheapest and most convenient way to see most of HK island. Ride on the ferry across the Victoria Harbour is also another main attraction. Central is the financial business sector where iconic Bank of China designed by IM Pei and Norman Foster’s HSBC headquarter is. There’s also hop on and bus to take you to many scenic places. Kowloon water front is spectacular at night, there’s also the avenue of Stars at Tsim Sha Tsui. Lots of shopping opportunities. Stanley is also another beautiful place with beaches. The big Buddha on Lantau Island is another attraction.

I will be travelling to GZ 3-6 April. I understand it coincide with the CHIN MING festival and some offices are closed for that period. Please let me know if travelling on public transport and visiting places of interest will be disrupted during this period. Also any recommendation of a good hotel near the Pearl River with subway within walking distance. Budget less than 400RMB per night ? Thank you in advance.

I've to confess I never travelled in China at the time of Qing Ming but I think the public transports never stop: China is not as "backward" as USA or France where strikes, days off etc. are common haha! Now 'bout the hotel indeed Guangzhou is quite expensive this is why I use to go at the Riverside International Youth Hostel, Changdi lu, Luju lu, Liwan dist, Guangzhou: they have dormitories as well as rooms: no need of being a member but in that case they make a discount. It is nicely situated on the banks of the Pearl River that one can cross by ferry (for 1y only) and reach Shamian island with the luxury Victory hotel & the shopping area. To reach there: metro line 1, Fangcun station, then by walk (enquire). Of course there are other hotels but more expensive and not so near the "old center".

I'm travelling from NZ to Vietnam and back in April and we are stopping over in China both ways.
We are stopping over in Guangzhou and we have just realised we are there for about 10-11 hours before we can check in for our flight.
From Guangzhou airport where to we need to go to get to the city and explore and see some things?
We will be looking for lunch and dinner and we just want to see a few sights while we have a chance.
How much money will we need for lunch and dinner and public transport ?
Thanks in advance

You'll land at Bayun Airport, Guangzhou. There you have the "metro" (subway) that takes you to the city center. If you like modern: go to the Tianhe side with Opera House, Guangzhou Library, Canton Tower. If you prefer ancient: the Chen Academy (Chenjia si) and temples nearby: Six Banians (Liurong si huata), Guangxiao si, Wuxian guan. If you still have time go to Shamian island near the Pearl River. For eating: I'm veg so my opinion is nul (or then order for "chaofan"). For hotel: there are hotels near the airport at medium prices or then go further down to the Bayun district or the Yuexiu park with, nearby, the Nan Yue King Mausoleum ( to see).

The ride on the Pearl River is best at night when you can see the lights from building on both sides of the river. I took my cruise at around 8:00 pm.

There are quite a few companies operating and I remember seeing some cruises in the day time while walking along the river.
The most popular ones would be after dark like around 7p or after.
If you stay in a hotel, the concierge should be able to give you specific schedule.
The info booth of GZ Tourism at the airport shoul have flyers/brochures of various cruises.
