I stayed at a hotel along Zhongshan South Road near the Guilin Railway Station. Early morning, I woke up at 5 am and commenced my morning walk to Decai Hill. The route to the destination was a straightforward one, walking from Zhongshan South Road to Zhongshan Chong Road and then Zhongshan North Road. Diecai Hill is just around near the corner at the beginning of Zhongshan North Road.
I only saw two entrances into the attraction. One entrance is near the coach parking area and most tourists entered into this attraction from this entrance. This is the East Gate entrance. The other entrance is the South entrance near the main road and I gained access into the attraction without paying for the admission ticket. I earlier thought it was free before 8 am but I subsequently learnt that it was free only for the local staying in Guilin. So, the guard at the entrance must have mistaken that I am a local. I also noticed when I came out from the attraction that the admission fee cost RMB 35.
There are four hills in this attraction, namely, Yuyue hill, Siwang Hill, Crane Peak and Bright Moon Peak. I climbed up all the four hills. Among the four hills, Yuyue Hill seems to me the easiest to climb and the lowest among them. There is a pavilion at the hill top and when you reached the top you could find few locals practicing tai-chi in the pavilion hall. The city view from the pavilion is not as gorgeous as that from the other hills..
The better panoramic views are on top of the other three hills in particular the Crane Peak and the Bright Moon Peak. I met a local couple at Crane Peak and he told me that if you did not hike up to the Bright Moon Peak, you are said to have not visited Diecai Hill. I started my hike up the Crane Peak, followed by Siwang Hill, Yuyue Hill and eventually, the Bright Moon Peak. The highest among the four of them is Bright Moon Peak, about 223 m lower than the Bukit Timah Hill in Singapore.
At the summit of Bright Moon Peak is a `longevity' marker with the words `Live to Two hundred and three when you hike up Diecai Hill.' The panoramic views of the Murong Lake with the distinct pagoda erected at the background were spectacular, stunniing and gorgeous. In fact, you need not seek admission to the Murong Lake attraction and you can see the scenery from this summit. You could also see the meandering view of the Li River as you ascend this hill.
At the base entrance up this hill is a big belly Laughing Buddha sculpture. Standing near to the cave entrance was a sculpture of Kang You wei, one of the pioneers who strongly advocated China to embark on the modernization programs before the downfall of the Qing Dynasty. He was said to have delivered his talks and promoted his patriotic modernization programs to many audience at this entrance.
I have much respect for this scholar though many criticized him for not revolutionary enough. If China would have embarked on the modernization programs earlier as proposed by him, the fate of China in the last century would have been different.
I enjoyed hiking up the Crane Peak and Bright Moon Peak. The views are really nice and spectacular. There are a number of hills in Guilin but I remember one foreigner who stayed in Guilin and he advised to hike this Diecai Hill instead of the rest. He is probably right.
It is an exhilarating climb and the painstaking effort is rewarded by the stunning panoramic views.

If you really want to climb the garst to see the views of Guilin, then it's worth paying the park entrance fee. But it's a long, sweaty climb and better views are available from the city centre. It is just as interesting to stroll around the outside of the park, following the new and old city wall and river. You'll see the pagoda, you will see the village from the bridge, you will also see some shrines and grotto's that are outside on the river bank. You'll see it all for free! The pagoda and the karst are clearly visible from the gates and you can get perfect pictures of both without going inside.

From Diecai Hill you get a great panorama of Guilin. There are a lot of steps to ascend, so be warned. But the climb is worth it.

Took the walk here, as a recommendation from staff at my hotel and I was not disappointed. Sure, it takes some effort to climb to the top, but you're rewarded with possibly the best view over this already dramatically backdropped town. It was also very inexpensive and very quiet and peaceful at the top.
I didn't do it, but there is also a pretty spectacular looking concrete slide that will bring you 2/3rds of the way back down the mountain!

This is an attraction that offers climbs up mountain sides and offers panoramic views of the city and Li River. It is worth the climb although it is steep and can be slippery in wet weather. The view depends on the weather as well, so take this into account. There are more than 400 steps on the way up to Bright Moon Peak where a 360 degree view of the city and surrounding mountains is visible. On the way up, one passes through the windy cave where winds blow constantly through a tunnel which narrows in its centre. One end of the cave is a Buddhist temple with many small carvings of Buddha dating back through the centuries.
There are other hills to climb, but I opted not to do so.
This is a good attraction if you want to see the city and if one wants to get some exercise. I would not recommend this for anyone with mobility concerns and would not go to this one on a cloudy or a misty day as the view is compromised. For kids, there is a massive slide which takes one from the top to a Pavillion near the windy cave. This slide is made of granite and looked like it could be a lot of fun...there is an extra charge.
There are other hills to climb, but I opted not to do so.

If you really want to get some great photos looking over Guilin then this is the place.
There are 3 main hills to climb that at times can be quite steep. The effort is rewarded with spectacular views over Guilin and a good workout at the same time.
Leave Bright Moon Peak as your last climb and then pay the RMB 20 for the good luck slide for a fun way to descend down part of the hill.
This was the best way to look over Guilin and the kids enjoyed the fun of the good luck slide.

A little further from Solitary Peak Hill and Fubo Hill, Diecai Hill is a cheaper alternative and, in my opinion, much more interesting. Give yourself an hour or so to climb to the highest point of the hill, and you will be rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view of the karst landscape and the city of Guilin that surrounds you. It is not as popular as the other scenic attractions within the city, especially if you go during non-peak periods, so you'll be treated to a peaceful hike.

To get to the top of the Folded Brocade hill is a fairly easy task of going up the stair-steps from within the hill which can take 20-30 minutes. After getting to the top, the views of Guilin and the surrounding hills and mountains are spectacular. The unique and beautiful mountains of this area is what makes Guilin such a great tourist attraction. Folded Brocade Hill is a must see place for first time visitors.

This is worth the visit as the views from the top are spectacular. There are many inscriptions carved into the mountains, and an air of ancient history.
There is a cave, that goes through the whole mountain, in the middle of the walk which is interesting (many Buddha and further inscriptions) and then just after there is a man at a small table who personally writes Chinese calligraphy for you onto fans etc. We asked this gentleman to write a small peom for our son for a memorable treasure from our trip.
Do visit the Solitary Beauty Peak.

While I had the misfortune of arriving here just as 4 tour busses unloaded, the hike up to the top was a nice, brief workout. Upon reaching the summit, I was rewarded with a 360 degree view of all of Guilin and the surrounding mountains.
