Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We wandered up and down the roads with a huge variety of foods and drinks to be tempted with, making it difficult to choose from.
It was very busy, but I did enjoy walking around the huge amount of stalls.

This place is what Disney seeks to achieve in their park rides. There is food, music, snacks, things to buy, things to watch. You can bargain over fake antiques, or buy annoying toys (e.g. shrilling chicken). This is one of the best things I have done in my 5 trips to China. This is the one place I would recommend to anyone. This is also known as the Muslim Quarter, if you ask the locals to visit.
Things to like, very few stairs, no admission charge, cooler temperatures at night, seemed safe to me.
Things you should do.
1. Buy some cheap gifts for the home folks such as the shrilling chicken (under $2), 24 kites on a string (under $2), various name player cards (can negotiate to under $2, asking price about $5), various t-shirts (under $10), scarves, and thousands of other nick-knacks.
2. Eat some food. I love the biang biang noodles (a wide flat noodle that is about 3 feet long, at about $4 per large bowl). My friends ate the Crumbled Flatbread in Mutton Stew (Yangrou Paomo). You see many things prepared onsite such as mung bean cake, various nuts, candies, and drinks. This place is also known as the Muslim quarter, so all of the food is halal.
3. Take a camera with video capabilities. You can watch them hammer the beans for the mung bean cakes, twist the noodles for biang biang, listen to the various street musicians, buy some of the many varieties of nuts.
A few caveats. The area is rumored to have pick pockets to place your money in an inner pocket. Be sure to bargain on the gifts. All of the vendors will bargain by showing numbers on a calculator. Prices will be in RMB. If you are American, the typical opening quote is 5-10 times the true price. You should be able to beat the prices your pay in America, so use that as your guide. If you are unwilling to pay more than $2 for a deck of cards in America, then do not pay more than $2/12 RMB in China. The place is shutting down by 10:30, so arrive early enough to spend some time there.
I went back three times, as each time I found new things to see.

This is a great (if sometimes overcrowded) night market.
It offers mainly food of all sorts, but also other market-ish stuff - clothes, fans, etc.
Don't miss the fake telescope near the market's entrance - those guys built lots of fake telescopes and they charge people for taking a look at the planets.
Everyone with a sharp eye can tell that those are not real telescopes (but rather home-made toys), but for many tourists, watching at taped blurry photos of the planets through a fake telescope is a must.
Try asking one of the telescope operators how come you can see the planets while the skies are so cloudy... . :)

You will enter into a bit of a cultural awakening when walking into the Beiyuanmen Night Market. There are so many sounds, colors, tastes, etc. You can eat so much meat and try so many new things! The restaurants were very good and authentic. We loved it so much, we went back a second night too! You truly feel like a local here! this is not a westernized place. After you try some of the food, talk a walk through the actual allies where you can find steal of deals. A great market of T-shirts, jewelry, and stuff.... name your price, but be good to the locals.... dont negotiate to try to win... know what you are willing to pay for something and enjoy the art of negotiation. but remember, this is how they make a living and what you are trying to negotiate may be a big deal to them. :)
Overall, If you are in Xi'an, this is a must!

We arrived in Xian and headed out for a walk near our hotel. (Citadenes Central Xian). We ended up at the market and absolutely loved it. Interesting sights and smells everywhere. We tried the kebabs which are 10RMB. The pulled pork rolls are delicious at 15RMB and we also loved the frozen yogurt which is a work of art at 15RMB.
The kids also loved the fairy floss art and shared one between the four of them.
It's a great place for cheap eats and the souvenirs are ok too. The kids bought a few bracelets for their friends back home
In Australia for 15 RMB.

My wife and me came here 13 years ago and it was autentic and magnificent.... now ... it look like Macao !!! Only food shops wheee quality hardly matters. Fruit juice are mixed half with water, bbq sticks in wood are reused (!!!).... have a 10 min walk and then move away to // streets along the mosque which are more peacefull and autentic.

Beiyuanmen Night Market or Muslim Street Market, this is the good place to taste the food in Xi'an.
Don't ask about the pock if visit this place, there is chicken, lamb, beef and local snack.
The squid in spicy sauce, you will see this menu all along the street, the price starts around 20 RMB. You can try if you like squid and spicy.
the sticky rice cake, you will see the big rice cake that has been separated into small piece with a bamboo stick, dipped with sweet brown sauce. taste is okay if you love to try something new. it is sticky rice in cold temperature; cost 3 RMB per stick (5RMB if you buy 2 sticks)
Lamb, you will see the Lamb meat hanging in front of the shop, you can try the sandwich with the lamb meat. There are many shops for you to select; the trick to picking the good shop; follow the long queues and you might get the good taste of this sandwich.
There are many more foods to try. If you have a chance to visit Xi'an, you need to come to visit this place.
It can be accessed by Subway or by Bus, depends on where is your hotel.
Note: this place also sells the souvenir from the Xi'an (Terracotta Army), it is quite cheap, depending on your choice.

This is just one part of the Muslim Quarter: the main alley right behind the Drum Tower. It's worth coming here in the evening. However avoid weekends as it gets extremely crowded. Great for people watching maybe not so much for the food. When entering Beiyanmen street there is a small alley right behind the Drum Tower with sign Mosque. This side alley is occupied with souvenir (mostly junk) sellers but much quieter than the food street.

If you don’t like crowds or getting pushed and shoved in the back, then definitely don’t come to Beiyuanmen Night Market during the first week of October. We’ve been to Xi’An before, around Christmas/New Years’ time and it was relatively calm. There were hordes of people this time and with the crowds, people get real snippy. Do not wear nice shoes at all! The floor was sticky, slimy and slippery. It was still an adventure but at times I just wanted to leave. However, there was such a log jam of people, once you got in the walkway, you couldn’t just back up. Instead of walking the entire distance, half way would suffice because the food and trinkets are the same. The food was very delicious though and perhaps the best street food I’ve eaten in China. The lamb BBQ sticks were 10 RMB and were loaded with meat. The meat sandwiches were 15RMB but perhaps a bit dry. The noodles were very fresh but the fruit had too many flies for comfort so we avoided that. The souvenirs were very affordable and overall it was an adventure but if I was a few years older or if I had young children, I wouldn’t even think about coming here.

Markets can be a really nice way to get a feel for a city and this place is no exception. Lots of hustle and bustle, and plenty of great people watching and photo opportunities. Street food in Xi'an is some of the best and most reasonably priced I had while in China.
