Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is more of a night time activity. You walk the crowded back laneways of the market where the vendors small stalls are crammed together leaving little room to walk if there are other people out shopping and there are always many others out shopping, eating or just people watching. You can buy almost anything here, although you can be sure most are knockoffs of the name brands they sport. Bargaining is expected and although the starting prices they give you are not high by North American standards you can still bargain lower (off half of what they ask and you'll probably settle somewhere around 60 - 70% of their original price). Take a look at the menus of the food vendors and some of the smaller restaurants. It's quite an eyeful of what some people eat in other cultures (deep fried squid-on-a-stick is very popular). Definitely try to have your evening meal at one of the restaurants that has tables with a view of the streets. Really enjoyed the walk and look (wife really enjoyed the bargaining and buying).

There is the Muslim market, close to the Old Mosque nearby the Drum Tower. This market is OK but with mainly souvenirs shops for tourist.
There is an other “non tourist” market in the west of the old town, west of the Lianhu Park, from Hungbu street to Laowu Alley. It is close to the Western ancient mosque (not the same as the Old Central Moque)Here you will find the local market where they will sell all kind of spices, vegetables, fruits,…
It all is very colorful, the smell of herbs floats through the air. You can have all kind of freshly made Dim Sums.

Had a great time at the Muslim Markets. My son had candy floss bigger than his head, the Xian burger is so delicious and the shopping is awesome. Be prepared to barter if you want a good price. We had our tourguide to help us with bartering. Lovely local scene with lots of delicious street foods to try, awesome shopping and great atmosphere. Thoroughly reccomend if you are a foody and love shopping. Lively place with lots of lights, people and vibrancy. Defintely worth a visit if you are in Xian.

It is actually an "all inclusive food flea market" in the old part of Xi'an city. The strong smells, the colors, the exhibition of total process for wide strip lasagnia noodles, the crazy 3-wheel taxis (hand made and electrically weld) the "all glass small bus taxis" (as well hand made and welded), the yelling of salesmen altogether create a critical submass of an unknown parallel world that lives, works and evolves (I hope) in this long shaped area of the old city.
Allow yourself to stroll and absorb whatever you can with all your senses! Do not fear to eat, everything is clean and safe (we tasted a lot of stuffs without consequences) .
I strongly though advise you all, go to toilet before entering this maddening "Court of miracles" (Oliver Twist) since no restaurant has any toilet in this area. And to try the common to all WC in this place is a not so douce experience....

This is a must see with its sights, sound, smell and tastes of local snacks and food. Their meat sandwiches are dry to taste but after a few the meat gets very flavorful of course you must like lamb and goat meat. Just be careful of bicycle and scooters front and back. A great photo rich environment: the food vendors are generally clean.

Such a busy little street, open air sellers selling all things on sticks, cooked meats, traditional toffees, dates and so it goes on, there is also an undercover section of the market where souvenirs can be purchased, don't forget to haggle it is all part of the visit

This market really was a fantastic place to find really really high quality clothing. Was it fake? Probably - but I honestly can't tell even comparing it side by side with stuff that is supposedly authentic and costing 20x more. For clothing I had success starting at 15% of their asking price and eventually settling in at 25%, having a price that I was unwilling to go over, and being able to leave the store if it was not going well. They will act very angry sometimes, but they won't sell you below cost so don't worry about it. I was able to pick up full national team soccer jersey kits (jersey and shorts) for $7.50 Canadian after conversion!

We walked to the Muslim quarter from our hotel (Grand Mercure) in the the Sofitel complex.
Turn Right as you exit the complex and walk along XinXin St. Then turn left at North St. (you will see the Bell Tower in the distance, it is situated in a roundabout in the middle of the street). It is a 15 minute walk to the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower is very nearby. And the Muslim quarter is next to the Drum Tower.
There is a wide variety of snacks (nuts & candies) & food to eat. Including street food (chicken, beef, lamb kebabs), which we ate. It was very good. Just make sure they cook it while you watch. Do not buy food that has been sitting around. We had no problems with the food.
The area is is lit up with neon & bustling with people
It was a 20 minute walk back to the hotel from the Muslim Quarter.

We had a lot of fun with this street ... just opening ourselves to taste whatever caught our eye. Traveling with two younger children (5 & 7) we really push cultural exploration, including food. We made a deal with them that mom and dad chose all the foods we all had to try on the way down the street, then on the way back, if they had tried everything we asked of them, they were able to select anything they wanted! Inexpensive way to explore MANY fun things, and unique tastes. Many of the street vendors were true entertainers (Turkish ice cream!) There were a lot of repeat foods, but so many people sometimes having another option was needed o you didn't have to wait too long.
There was also a shopping market to scope out for some souvenirs. Not too overly priced and convent for sure! (Good lunch or dinner adventure!)
It was a hot day in August, but the shade made it much more doable than some other walks and streets.

if you enter the south gate several times during the day, do you have to pay each time?
Written 14 January 2015
Yes, once you are out from the gate (City Wall), when you reenter, you need to pay again. So, make full use of your time to go to all the NSEW gates, quite a distance to walk from one gate to another gate. But, there is no fees for Muslim street no matter where you enter.
