Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The underground maze of several walkways going back and forth seem to stretch several kilometers. The weather is indeed chilly during winter , and staying at the Sapporo Grand Hotel , we would later discover this pathway underneath at the basement which has a plethora of shops , restaurants and fast food outlets. Several toilets along the way can be seen. But take note most are closing by 9 pm so we can be wary of that .

I really have to give zero for creativeness and warmth as well for this foyer. It is warm inside though.

Like most big cities (Osaka, Tokyo Yaesu, Fukuoka TienJin) there will be larger underground area for both pedestrian movement & also retail space. The one in Sapporo is considered a larger one approximately 520m, stretching from Sapporo Station to Odori Station on Subway Namboku Line.
Both stays for us in Sapporo are close to it so we use quite often. There are throngs of people moving through the place daily, including tourists like us. Reckon it would be a great place against inclement weather (rain/winter) while at same time can enjoy both shopping & dining; plenty of Shops, restaurants & more. Noted there are some recess area whereby Events activities are setup along the long walkway, definitely a great way for exhibition or promotion. We have seen children art drawing, weekend local veg sales and even Sports promotion over our past trips here. There are tables and chairs for one to relax, and there is also a free Wi-Fi service. I saw on documentary there had even placed a piano for passerby to play Impromptu too!.
We especially like to explore from Akrenga Terrace onwards, going down to get bf at either Pronto or Mac. Noted that the walkway connect to Pole Town and continues all the way Susukino subway station. The Aurora Town branches off to the east leads to the TV Tower and clock tower. Sure fun for exploring. A must-visit, do include inside your itinerary in your next trip here at Sapporo.
When it rains or weather too hot/cold, this underground is just wonderful!

A huge underground mall. Plenty of shops and places to eat. It can be somewhat confusing if you are not paying attention. It would be nice if there was some seating in the public areas. You can go from the JR station to Susukino and never see the outside.

The network of this underground world is huge.
While it mainly runs North South, at the JR Station end, it runs back to Tanuki Koji.
It’s great in winter if you don’t like the cold, and fast way to walk to JR or Stellar Place / Daimaru.

I visited Sapporo in Winter and spent a bit of time in the underground malls. This one was huge, seemed like you could walk for miles or kilometers. There are many access and exits points here to include entering and exiting department stores. There are several restaurants and shops down here. You could spend all day here. For a high trafficked area, it was pretty clean.

The underground pedestrian passage is absolutely massive and lets you walk all the way from Sapporo Station all the way to Susukino, as well as branching out under Odori Park.
Very useful and convenient especially when it is raining or during winter.

Miles upon miles of Underground Service tunnels, but they had Shops, Toilets, Restaurants, Take-Aways etc etc.
During Storms, heavy rain and/or the worst of Winter, and it does get cold up here in Sapporo - these Pedestrian walkways would be a life-saver.

During the snow festival we got real cold and needed to warm up. A friend of our daughters that lives in Sapporo took us to the underground pedestrian area and we wished we had known about it sooner. It goes farther west than I thought it did, so was accessible from several places along the festival route.

Hi I'd like to buy some winter shoes for hiking in sapporo, which I can also use in my home country after (tropical country). Would you know any good shops that sell such shoes? Or maybe a Merrell store in Sapporo?

Hi, this is just the underground area that links the subways and shops - its like a long arcade under the open air street. It protects you from the wind and snow and there are many shops, mini markets, stalls, information booths. If you still can;t find it, go to the Daimaru dept store and take the lift to the lowest level, I think its level B for basement, walk through the food hall which exits to the underground pedestrian area. Enjoy!
