The area
Address
Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Was a great experience with my wife and daughter. It started with a history of calligraphy and the Japanese language, which was delivered so well. We then were taught the basics of claigraphy and chose a word each to draw. I chose Samurai. You get a lot of practice before making a final effort onto card. Highly recommend

I had a great tea ceremony experience at Green Rose! The experienced tea master Wakaba-san gave a very nice introduction to the art of tea ceremony, and also showed us the nice crafts the created for her salon. It felt very authentic, and I enjoyed having her full attention during the ceremony. There are two parts: first, Wakaba explains about tea and serves it according to tea ceremony etiquette; then the guests have a go at making their own matcha tea. So you get to taste matcha twice!
You can take pictures - just ask when you should not take any and just enjoy the peaceful tea ceremony. Also, you get to receive a certificate with your own name written in katakana. The tea ceremony costs only 2,000 yen per person. The salon is a 7-minute walk from Nijo Station, and a 15-minute walk from Nijo Castle. It is located in a non-touristy area, away from the hustle and bustle. A great memory from my time in Kyoto :)
You can also enjoy a calligraphy class as the tea master is also a very skilled calligraphy teacher. Come relaxed and with an open mind, since both tea ceremony and calligraphy require your calm and undivided attention.

The calligraphy lesson is really nice! The teacher (Wakaba) is very friendly. Wakaba speaks English and her instructions are easy to understand. The environment is comfortable to learn in, because the teacher helps you, gives you advice, and also you can practice for as many times as you like, until you are ready to make your best calligraphy for you to take home! After the lesson, there is a calligraphy demonstration on a big paper mural, and many good photo ops. It's a fun calligraphy workshop!

The calligraphy course was a fantastic experience which helped me to understand a very important side of Japanese culture. The teacher introduced me in a clear and synthetic way to the art and the origin of Japanese writing. She was so patient and dedicated when teaching me, so I could really improve step by step. The price is also very moderate, especially for having a professional teaching you. Very very recommended!
