Neighbourhood: Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.

Located slap bang in the busy shopping area a lovely little temple well worth a quick visit - looks really pretty at night when the lanterns are lit you will probably stumble on it when shopping so no need to make a special visit

When you are walking around the Shin Kyogoku Shopping Street, you will encounter this super small, but very neat shrine. Since it is on the Nishiki Koji Street at its easternmost spot, it is called the Nishiki Tenman-gu Shrine or the “Tenman-gu Shrine at Nishiki .”

It enshrines the spirit of Sugawara Michizane, a Heian Period scholar and politician who was made a deity after his death in the early 10th century. The main shrines are in Kyoto (The Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine) and in Fukuoka (The Dazaifu Tenman-gu Shrine). The Nishiki Tenman-gu Shrine is a branch shrine of the Kitano Tenman-gu Shrine.

You will see a shiny bronze cow in the complex with a family crest that looks like five round dots on it. They represent Sugawara Michizane as the cow is connected to his life in many different ways and the his family crest is a stylized plum flower.

This shrine is also known for its fresh water from a small well. It’s said to be coming from some 100 feet below and excellent for drinking or making tea.

The shrine took us totally off guard as we weren’t expecting it to be tucked between stores in a mall. It is small, but cute.

This shrine is at the far end of Nishiki Market. It's pretty small, but has some fun features. There is a robot lion that dances and dispenses omikuji (fortunes available in English). There are some other animatronics, so make sure you bring some coins. Since it is a tenmangu there is a cow statue whose head you can rub for wisdom.

A temple just off the bustling shopping street. The lanterns in front can't be missed and it is definitely worth turning in to take a look.
In the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the shopping arcades, finding a temple - an island of peacefulness - is a real treat.
Worth a peak and a stroll.

If you've visited Nishiki Market and walked its entire length, it's impossible to miss this city shrine located at the market's east entrance. Small and unassuming, it doesn't look like much of an attraction although the rows of lanterns outside beckon the visitor to enter. And yet, it's an oasis of calm amid the crowds that throng the Nishiki & Teramachi shopping rows. It's not usually very crowded, except perhaps on New Year's Day, but like all other temples, it helps to be discreet when taking photos.

Amazingly, the temple's origins go back a thousand years although it's only been in its current location since the mid-16th century. Inside, it's a miniature version of many of the more famous temples in Kyoto. There's the main shrine with what look like tablets located within, a purification fountain, and an animal statue (in this case, a cow) that visitors rub for good fortune.

The Nishiki Tenmangu Shinto Shrine, at the eastern end of the Nishiki Market is an oasis of calm within the frenetic arcade. Hung with beautiful lamps, the entrance beckons you in, to experience a few moments of peace away from the crowds.

This small shrine in the shopping district of Kyoto is hard to miss if you're on the shopping trail. It is a very nicely maintained small shrine just of Shinkyogoku.

It's like all roads lead to this Shrine. At the end of the Nishiki Market. A welcome completion to the outing. You don't expect to find this delightful space in this area.
