Neighbourhood: Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.

The blazing fall colors of red, yellow, orange, pink and brown made the visit Instagram worthy. Need I say more? - Josie IinoCambridge, United Kingdom735 contributions4.5 starsI found the actual rock garden to be underwhelming. However, because I came early in the morning, there was little to no crowd - I had the privilege of enjoying the autumn leaves mostly by myself for around an hour. It was absolutely stunning. There is a certain section with a peculiar type of tree (pictured below) covered by maroon and scarlet leaves - that was a one in a million view. It was also very serene to walk around the pond. I really liked it here - 4.5 stars.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 10 December 2023
- Ellen BHortonville, Wisconsin1,302 contributionsPeaceful Zen TempleThis is a beautiful temple to visit. The grounds are very well maintained, and the autumn colors are beautiful, even in December! There are many beautiful views iv water and woods. There is a peaceful rock garden, which is well set up for some time spent in contemplation. The grounds are easily walkable for anyone, our group included a 4 year old, a young adult, and an active senior. We also dined at the vegetarian restaurant, enjoying a “hot pot” family style lunch.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 December 2023
- Emma CGodalming, United Kingdom3,049 contributionsZen LovelinessI've been here a few times over the years. The grounds and gardens are magical. The Zen Rock Garden is the main reason most people visit, of course, and it is wonderful. It is ruined slightly by the crowds of noisy people, which stops it being as Zen as it could be, but nevertheless, it is a must-see in Kyoto, in my opinion. Try to visit early or late to avoid said crowds.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2023

A n open sided temple with a contemplation platform overlooking a dry zen garden which is raked daily by the monks. Take your thoughts, allow them to settle, then let your mind fly. A special place.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 March 2024
- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania2,213 contributionsBeauty Is in the Eye…My wife and walked about 20 minutes from the Golden Pavilion to visit the famous rock garden of Ryoanji Temple. We might be in the minority, but we found the rock garden to be extremely underwhelming. It reminded me of some sort of avant-garde art that we just didn’t “get.” We can say that we saw it but we didn’t get much else out of the visit.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024
- Stu2247Solihull, United Kingdom820 contributionsZen rock garden. An interesting rock garden with 15 rocks, apparently you are supposedly unable to view all 15 rocks at one time due to their positioning in the garden. The gardens are beautifully manicured, and it is a nice peaceful area to spend time strolling around the gardens and lake. Not overly busy.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2024
- Julie S345 contributionsLovely temple.Lovely temple to visit, very interesting to wander round. You need to take your shoes off in here and I found going upstairs, whilst holding my shoes in a plastic bag, quite difficult. Make sure you take time to go in Roanji Gardens too as they are beautiul.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 May 2024
- Franziska KMulhouse, France144 contributionsMoment ZenMoment zen for the whole family, our 2 teenagers appreciated the garden and zen atmosphere there as well. Can easily be combined with the Golden Pavillon, just 30' minutes walk from each other. First do the Golden Pavillon (crowded), then walk to the Ryoanji Temple and enjoy the Zen setting there.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 June 2024
- Bernard WDallas, Texas1,914 contributionsNo shoesRyoan-ji Temple is about a mile from Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion). We walked, but there is a bus that goes from one temple to the other. Here you will have to remove your shoes, but fear not, you will walk on tatami mats to see the garden and rooms. There is a rock garden of 15 rocks absent of trees. You can also see a tea room and other rooms visible to the visitor. This is quite different than other temples we toured.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 June 2024

After coming into the temple, there is on the left a zen garden made from 15 stones and white gravel. From the first impression looks ordinarily, but if You sit and look at it for some time, your minds turning into calm and peace. Very strange impression. The garden itself was made at the end of 15-th century and is absolutely worth preservation.
At the area of the temple, there is also a big pond with island (easily accessible) and a small restaurant, where You can eat yudofu (boiled tofu), seen as a local speciality. From my point of view nothing special, but served in a nice atmosphere.

The kare-sansui (dry landscape) garden at Ryoanji Temple has delighted visitors for centuries , the meaning embodied in the garden has been lost in time, it has also undergone a couple of make overs in the past, the gardens surrounding the temple are also very beautiful, ideal for a peaceful stroll.
Akisato Rito is responsible for the garden we see today which was finished in 1779, the glorious simplicity and serene beauty of this garden consisting of fifteen rocks set amidst an expanse of raked river pebble, exudes stillness.
It is an amazing garden that lives up to it's World Heritage listing.

This temple garden is the quintessential Zen garden. It is serene , composed, and you take off your shoes to enter it. The surrounding walls, trees and sky all contribute to this beautiful gravel garden with carefully selected and placed stones. What a treat!

I was looking forward to it after reading so much about it and it did not disappoint. I went there on a Tuesday morning (at opening time) and I had the rock garden for myself for about 10 minutes before people started to come. I'd recommend going there as early as possible to enjoy the quietness of the place. The rest of the temple grounds were beautiful as well.

We visited the temple around 3pm, it was not crowded, we enjoyed the beautiful scenery around the temple, admired the famous rock garden, inside the building, you need to take your shoe off to visit rock garden.
On our visit, visitors in the rock garden sitting area were all very quiet, and everyone can enjoy the peaceful and zen moment, it was quite a special moment.
Toilets were clean and easy to find, there are a few souvenirs, snack shop and few drink vending machine located near the entrance.
My advise is don't rush, enjoy the walk, hold hand with your loved ones or simply enjoy the moment.

Do you have to buy a ticket to see the temples across Japan?

We were only in Kyoto and temples usually have a small charge, that you pay at the entrance. You take your shoes off at the entrance too, or put on some overshoes.

My husband and I visited this beautiful temple and zen garden in November and saw small owl (fukuro) figurines for sale at the gift shop by the rock garden. This is a long shot, but if anyone is currently planning a trip to Ryoanji, would you be willing to buy two for me and ship them to the United States? I'd gladly reimburse for the cost, shipping, etc. Owls were very important to my mom, who passed away two years ago and I would like to get them on her behalf. I haven't been able to find an email address to contact the temple to ask, unfortunately, so I would greatly appreciate the kindness of fellow travelers! I could find a photo of them to share. Please private message me if this is a possibility for you. Thank you!
