Hogonin Temple is near to Tenryuji Temple and the momiji inside the garden has already turned to fall colors by end November. As entrance fee is required thereat, there is not many visitors inside due to heavy rains by the time of visit. Furthermore, due to time limitation, we just took a few photos from outside and hoped to come... More

We visited for the night illumination and it was spell binding. Great mix of evergreens and maples, with very tastefully decorated buildings in the garden.

I visited here in early November a little to early to see the full fall colors, but was not disappointed. I visited many temples during my 2 days in Kyoto and found this to be the best. Few tourist even though it is a stones throw from Tenryuji Temple, one of the most famous temples in Kyoto. The landscaping and... More

Called here as you do on your visit every temple in Kyoto tour. Found it to be quite modern and somehow nothing special. Worth going round the gardens though which were beautiful and gave good views over the city, you also have the advantage of getting to the bamboo groves, from the garden.

This temple is just few step away from Tenryuji temple ,I came here after I visit Tenryuji temple, I'm so surprised that I'm the only person walking around the garden there's no others visitors . Although the maple leaves already fall down but is still a very beautiful garden ,walking around the temple I feel very peaceful and I really... More

Hogonin was located on a large site. I saw that we come here not only to see the building of temple, but also for the beautiful garden that they have. My advice should hire a bike to get around the area of interest around this place.

This small garden/temple was the pinnacle of autumn colours in our trip to Japan, just stunning reds/yellows with great contrast with green moss. Extremely crowded though, it felt like going through lane on some new product, but it was worth it. They even have night show with lights, but we did not see that. If you are in the area... More

This is my 4th time to visit here. The garden is not so big as Tenryu-ji, very small but it is made so beautifuly organized. It takes 3 min walk from Tenryu-ji. Spring and Summer view is also excelent but the best is Autmun. When I came here last Autmun, it was a bit late for enjoying autumun leaf. This... More

Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
