This 400 year old Senkoji Temple was once a prayer temple for Emperor Gosaga but was severely damaged by a major typhoon in 1959. Philanthropy projects are not common in Japan so they are struggling to maintain it. We participated in a Zen meditation session...More

We took a hand poled boat to the base of the Temple grounds which was fun in its own right. There are then 230 or so steps up to the Temple. People of all ages were able to make this climb. We engaged in a...More

So great to be the only visitor here in the morning hours and enjoyed morning meditations here with the Buddhist Monk and hearing about the history and significance of the Temple. A true hidden gem in Kyoto. 30-45 minute walk along the peaceful Oigawa and...More

The walk to the temple is one of the highlights of the trip. You walk along a river path and barely see another tourist (making you wonder if you are in the correct spot.). Upon reaching the gate you climb higher & higher to get...More

This is a small Buddhist Temple and Monastery (only 1 monk and 2 students at present), but the ultimate in authenticity. You reach it only by traveling upriver in a pole boat, then hiking up a "mountain" trail with many switchbacks. At top, you ring...More

From the monkey attraction it is approx 1-1.5km hilly walk/ride to this temple. But, compared to the hussle and bussle of every other temple, at 4pm this one walk an amazing peaceful walk next to a river in a valley. Very soothing. 400Y entry is...More

You need to climb up the hill to reach the temple but it's worth the effort. The fee is 400 yen. The morning is a good time to go.

The walk along the banks of the river and the photo stops of the colourful mountain along the way was unforgettable. It took much longer than the said 18 mins on the board. We didn't intend to come here but we kept walking along the...More

Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best
eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved
Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji
Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea
houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the
riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature
lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The
area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and
