A lovely walk

A nice walk to look at the buildings and the restaurants and shops. I went at night so it was all lit up. A pleasant break from the day time sight seeing.

A fantastic street to walk at night and choose an eatery for dinner. So many options and sake bars as well. The small street gives you a historic look into cultural Japan

Like Gion it offers a a less modernized view of Kyoto. The streets are narrow an intimate. There many places to people watch, eat and shop. If you visit Kyoto it is a must!

An absolute must if visiting Kyoto! Best to visit at night when it is lit up. Delicious food and overall magical experience. We visited on a Friday evening and saw a number of Geisha moving between tea houses at around 6pm

Yes it was very romantic and enchanting walking around these streets on misty nights. Lots of small restaurants with a diverse mix of cuisines.

Pontocho has a great selection of small bars and places to eat along a series of small alleyways. It was quite lively even on a Tuesday night - although has a little bit of a seedy element to it but was good for a night out.

On a clear night, thee is no place better than to stroll around then through Pontocho. People sitting out on decks overlooking the lovely river, all the beautiful lanterns lighting the way. It gets very crowded in Spring and Summer, so you need to be patient. It is not the cheapest place to eat, but you will find a good... More

Pontocho is a MUST see because it's so unique. The streets are narrow and quaint, with an endless amount of restaurants lining them. You have to eat somewhere on this street at least once while visiting Kyoto.

Staying in Pontocho

Neighbourhood Profile
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.
