The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

This was an amazing experience! My partner and I had a private lesson, which was a great way to go. I am a pretty experienced home cook and love to cook a variety of different foods at home, and still learned so much about certain Japanese cooking techniques and tips. Momo was very friendly, gave us so much great information about the dishes and also Japanese cuisine in general. She was patient and the kitchen was clean and other staff was friendly. She even offered a list of her recommended restaurants in the area, which we went to and were delicious (and we were able to recognize some of the Japanese cooking basics we learned at the restaurants which was cool!) I'm so excited to try these techniques at home! Would highly recommend this experience.

This was a great cooking class for all skill levels. It gave us a few surprises in things we'd never made nor heard of, which was fantastic. the instructors were easy going and super helpful.

If you enjoy cooking and cooking classes as a means of engaging another culture, I highly recommend this one.

Highly recommend this experience for anyone who enjoys eating and/or cooking. I did this class with my family (ages range from 12 to mid-70s) and everyone had an awesome time. We made 6 dishes plus stock. The menu and class were very well planned, instruction was clear, and the food was delicious. It’s a great option if you’re looking for a fun hands-on group activity.

We loved our morning cooking class and was surprised how good our Bento Boxes turned out! It was due to the great demonstrations and help by the staff. I enjoy doing cooking classes when visiting other countries and this one was no exception. A wonderful way to spend a morning and with a delicious lunch at the end.

This was a fun cooking class and a great introduction into some traditional Japanese cooking methods and the iconic bento box. The instructors were great and made sure everyone was having fun and following the steps in the cooking and were very helpful if anyone needed any help.
