About
Your opportunity to be part of Kyoto! "Ami Kyoto" provides traditional Japanese cultural experience in English for foreign visitors. You can experience Ikebana (Japanese art of flower arrangement, Calligraphy and Tea ceremony in our 100-year-old traditional Kyoto townhouse. The foundation of Japanese traditional culture was laid in the Muromachi period. At that time, people called "ami" protected and promoted the emerging culture, including noh dance and the tea ceremony. They were priests who served a shogun or feudal lord, and sowed the seeds of our classical aesthetic values. Ami emphasized equality, virtue, harmony and calmness in their contribution to cultural development. "Ami Kyoto" continues to spread their spirituality which still underlies the Japanese culture of today.

Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

The best thing to do in Kyoto
I had an ikebana class with Ami while visiting Kyoto in June, 2023 and it was amazing! I was greeted by my teacher, gorgeously clad in a traditional kimono and led into an authentic Japanese house, feeling the tatami mats with my bare feet and admiring the love of nature, beauty, tranquility and functionality around me. The class itself simply could not have been better. Ami is a professional teacher, a reliable guide to the complex world of this sophisticated art, and a practicing artist as well. In a very short time, I received a comprehensive historical and cultural background surrounding the ikebana art, as well as its semantic and aesthetic value. For a beginner, it was just what I needed as a foundation. Then, Ami brought in the flowers, and while I was failing to figure out the line, and the mass, and how they grow in the wild, she was patient and supportive. Of course, I did many things wrong, and she corrected me providing even more insight and sharing more knowledge. Honestly, it was one of the best things I did on my wonderful trip to Japan. I highly recommend this class. Every minute was a delight! Thank you so much!
Dear olgagW8237QY, Thank you very much for joining us and writing a review for us! We are really grateful for your detailed review and complements. It's more than great to know you enjoyed the lesson and it was informative for you. The class with you was one of the most meaningful sessions for us. You created a beautiful artwork eventually and we learned a lot from it, too. It's our honor to spend a time with you. We hope you'll enjoy ikebana at home from time to time and we'll see you again in the near future. Thank you so much again!! Best Regards, Kimi

    Wonderful calligraphy class in Kyoto
This was a last minute booking for us but we are so glad we did. We all had a wonderful time and it will be one that we all remember. Our teacher was kind and patient with us and gave us just the right amount of explanation about the language characters before letting us build our skills. We managed to all create pretty good fans with our chosen calligraphy. If you are in Kyoto definitely give this a try.
Dear Muna a, Thank you very much for joining our calligraphy experience. It was our pleasure to accommodate you, too. We are so happy to learn that your family had a great time with our calligraphy instructor and the lesson became a part of your good memories in Kyoto. We'll pass your thoughtful comment to her as well. We were impressed with all of your beautiful art works. We truly hope we are meeting you again in the near future. Thank you so much! Best Regards, Kimi from Ami Kyoto

    Insightful and Pleasant Learning Experience
We took an ikebana flower arrangement class with Kimi and she was wonderful! She patiently explained the intricacies of ikebana arrangement, going over its history and all the different styles. When we had questions, she demonstrated her great knowledge of the topic by answering them all comprehensively. We especially loved how Kimi explained the importance of seasonality in Japanese art -- gaining this insight into the Japanese way this helped us appreciate even our later stops (at museums or historical sites) even more. It was a fantastic experience, and both of us even bought our own ikebana material afterwards to continue the practice back home! We highly recommend this experience.
Thank you very much for attending our ikebana class and writing a review for us! It's more than great to learn that you were satisfied with the lesson. We are really happy to share our knowledge and techniques of traditional Japanese culture and it's our pleasure it was informative and helpful for you, especially to see our culture from different points of view. Let's practice again when you come back to this ancient capital next time. We truly look forward to seeing you again in the near future. Thank you so much again. Best Regards, Kimi

    Fantastic and unique cultural experience
Going in with no knowledge of Ikebana (or Japanese flower arranging) meant we were a completely blank canvas. We learnt the meaning, history, a few different styles and lots of technique of Ikebana before getting a hands on experience. My wife and I had the same flowers and teachings but both created completely unique, individual and beautiful creations. They're not practical to take them home with you but what you do leave with is knowledge and appreciation of a beautiful and historical skill which I will carry forward through my life and practice when I get the opportunity! Thank you so much!
Dear I1874OIpatrickk, Thank you very much for participating in our ikebana lesson. We are so happy to know it was informative for you and you enjoyed it. As you mentioned, it was not possible for you to bring back the ikebana arrangement, but please use the technique and concepts when you make a flower decoration at home. We truly appreciate you wrote a review for us and we look forward to meeting you again in the near future. Thank you so much again!! Best Regards, Kimi from Ami Kyoto

    Amazing Calligraphy Experience
Absolutely incredible experience. We had a private calligraphy lesson for two people. Our tutor Chikako was so informative, patient and knowledgeable it really made the experience that much better! The lesson itself was such a great insight into the art of calligraphy, most definitely one of our best experiences throughout the whole of Japan.

    Amazing Ikebana Experience!
We did an ikebana floral arrangement class while in Kyoto for our honeymoon. It was an incredible experience from start to finish! The townhouse provided a tranquil ambiance and our instructor Kimi was an ikebana pro! She shared with us the history of the artform, the philosophy of creating an arrangement, and was even on hand to make sure the final product leaned into the main principles of ikebana. We had an excellent time and would recommend this experience to anyone!
Dear S4461FPerics, Thank you very much for participating in our ikebana lesson. We are very glad to know you were satisfied with the lesson and the facility. We were also impressed how deeply you understood the concepts and you created such beautiful ikebana arrangements. It was our pleasure to celebrate your honeymoon together. We appreciate your kind review and look forward to meeting you again in the near future. Thank you so much! Best Regards, Kimi from Ami Kyoto

    Expert Ikebana experience!
Such a wonderful experience with an expert teacher for Ikebana flower arrangement. Highly organized, very exact directions, providing a history of the art form, and a most enjoyable class with great results. Would highly recommend to any visitors in Kyoto and possibly even online. She was such an outgoing and friendly teacher, and at the end gave me two amazing handcrafted little owls, that I will keep and cherish with the memory.

My wife, daughter and I were able to get both the Ikebana and Tea Ceremony Experience at Ami Kyoto. Kimiko was our instructor for both. Her knowledge and energetic presentations made us feel welcome and added greatly to our appreciation of both of these treasured parts of Japanese culture. We would highly recommend both of these classes for a tourist to Japan.

We did both the tea ceremony and ikebana and loved them both. They seemed delivered authentically and bespoke for us at a time we reserved. Kimi san was very knowledgeable and helpful and honest and we learnt a great deal - it was a highlight of our trip. Don't miss the nearby Netsuke museum !

My husband and I took the Ikebana workshop and had a lovely time. Kimi-san was a fantastic teacher, and it was a lot of fun to make our own ikebana arrangements. The history and thought process behind ikebana was so interesting. Ikebana looks simple but it's deceptively complicated. I could've spent all day on my arrangement.

Kimi-san gave all of us (very gentle!) critique on our arrangements, which I appreciated. I was amazed how just bending one branch this way or that way could make such a difference.

If you're in Kyoto and want something a little different while also immersing yourself in traditional Japanese culture, I highly recommend this workshop.

Thank you very much for taking our ikebana experience and writing a review for us. We are really glad you enjoyed creating your ikebana arrangement and the lecture was informative for you. After my learning ikebana for 20 years, I often receive suggestions and alternations from my ikebana master. Ikebana = Kado = the way of flower never ends. We hope you made a lot of good memories in Japan and we'll see you again in the near future. Best Regards, Kimi from Ami Kyoto

Don't walk to take a class with Ami Kyoto—RUN. I wish bonus stars existed for this unparalleled experience! My husband and I were visiting Japan for our honeymoon and felt a strong aversion to overtly "touristy" experiences but really wanted to learn the magic of Ikebana. Our graceful and gracious instructor Kimi made us feel immersed in another world from the moment we met her. With warmth and infectious enthusiasm, she patiently explained the history and process of this floral art form and then guided us through our own personal interpretations. We were so moved by the intentionality and poetry of Ikebana we talked about it for the rest of our trip. It was an exquisite morning we will never forget. If you sign up for any guided experience, take our word for it and make it this one. You will be forever changed for the better. Thank you Kimi for being one of the highlights of our honeymoon. xx

Thank you very much for attending our ikebana class and writing a review for us! We are terribly sorry for this late reply because we haven't noticed your review until now for some reason. We truly appreciate your beautiful comment (almost complement😊) and we are more than happy to learn that you enjoyed the lesson and it became a part of your good memories on your honeymoon to Japan. It's also grateful a lovely couple like you chose our country for the destination of honeymoon 💕 We hope you'll come to Japan for your anniversary trip (or even for no reason😁) and we'll see you again in the near future. We moved into our new venue this March (the one you visited was our temporary venue) which is a traditional Kyoto townhouse. We look forward to welcoming you again there. Thank you so much again!! Warmest Regards, Kimi from Ami Kyoto

There were many wonderful moments from our honeymoon in Japan. One of the highlights was an afternoon introductory Ikebana class with Kimi. She was prepared and ready for us, welcoming and gracious, and a deeply devoted student and practitioner of the art of ikebana. We both felt very fortunate to meet Kimi and learn about Ikebana from her. She explained the basic concepts to us and then guided us through making our own arrangements and helped us improve them until they were truly stunning. She spoke clear, articulate English and was generous with her time. I would recommend anyone have a class with her for a very meaningful cultural experience in Kyoto.
