The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

After reading several positive reviews my husband, 6 yr old son and I decided to take an hour class to learn how to be a stealth ninja warrior and we were incredibly entertained and impressed the entire time! If you want to learn how to attack with shuriken ninja stars, fukiya blow darts and swords, and sneak in and out of enemy quarters in the dark, this is the place for you! Don’t worry it’s kids-safe! Our instructor was very informative. Some of her English words were a little challenging at times for my 6 year old to understand but by the grin on his face I could see he didn’t seem to mind. She easily demonstrated and assisted all the moves to him with ease. Make sure to bring your camera! It’ll be entertaining for all- friends and families! We laughed ourselves to tears! Thank you Ninja Dojo! This is an experience we will always treasure! Location: 5 min walk from the Shijo Station (use GPS) just two stations away from Kyoto station on the Karasuma line. Afterwards, walk to the Nishiki Marketplace for dinner, shopping and don’t forget to try Rolly’s Roll Ice Cream-yum! (10-15 min walk from Ninja Dojo & Store).

Our family of four (2 adults (in our 50s), 2 teenagers) took the 2-hour lesson at the Ninja Dojo and Store. I am so glad that we did. The time flew by. We learned so much from our instructor -- both about the history of Ninjas in Kyoto and the weapons they used. We started by dressing in Ninja garb; our kids loved it. We covered so much in two hours -- using real and fake weapons such as Ninja Stars, knives, blow dart guns, ropes, even how to use chopsticks in an attack. Our instructor's English was perfect, and he was very patient. With his good looks, long ponytail and calm, stealthy Ninja walk, he could be a movie star! I cannot recommend this enough; it was one of the highlights of our trip to Japan. After the lesson, they have lots of things for sale if you are interested (tourist ninja-related keepsakes but also real ninja stars etc., there was no pressure to buy, just interesting to look at). By the way, when we arrived, the taxi driver couldn't find the store -- it's on the second floor and not obvious when you are in the taxi.

Great introduction to Ninja stuff, I have now left my job to become a full time Ninja! I found a hidden talent for throwing sharp things and for killing people with blow darts, I can also find the enemy in the dark and finish him. I think like ninja, breath like ninja, walk like ninja, am ninja.

We did the 2 hour class and would definitely recommend it. The session was both fun and informative with activities such as meditation, using weapons including throwing stars and blow darts, learning how to properly draw and sheathe a sword as well as ninja walking in the dark. The instructor is knowledgeable about all things ninja providing good, clear instruction in excellent English. Absolutely worth 24,000 yen for 2 people.

Next to a tea ceremony (a must in Kyoto) and a Zen meditation with a Zen monk, this was one of the three highlight activities in Kyoto.
The ninja trainer was knowledgeable, empathetic and funny, our kids loved it. We took the one hour training and for small kids this is just right.

Me and my partner had great fun at the two hour class on Friday 22/11/19. We loved every second, the staff were super friendly and helpful. Highly recommend, lots of weapons and attacks to practise in a fun way as well as learning some history and spiritual elements.

Our family had a great time learning about all things Ninja. Highlights were the shuriken throwing & blow darts. Jin was a great teacher & kept us all engaged, including our 10 & 13 year olds.

Thank you so much for a fantastic morning, we have all loved it and it was the highlight of our trip. You have made it fun and very special. Our 10-year-old was totally engaged and focused and thinks that he is a Ninja now. He is still practicing his Ninja walk 🙂
Also, the photos are amazing! what a lovely addition to a perfect experience.
We hope to see you again one day for some follow up training.

This was THE highlight of my trip to Japan! The instructor was fun and very patient. It was my best friends second visit to the dojo, she brought her kids time before and they loved every minute of it. I am a blackbelt in MMA so this was a fun chance to play with swords and shurikens! Definitely, be bringing my kids next time!

Do you have to book? And if so, how? Or do you just have to reach there and pay in-person? Thanks in advance.
Written 20 May 2018
You can go to their website either from TripAdvisor or via google. The website has the booking option for whatever course you have in mind. Just fill in the required details and booking is made in your name. No money to be paid up front. You pay when you get there.
If you want to go without booking, I would still recommend checking out their website as when you try to book, the empty slots in the day’s course are available for ready reference. This way you don’t waste your time if the course is close to full.

Did they let your 3-year-old participate? I am hoping my son will be able to take the class with his older brother and sister. He is three and a half years old. Thank you!
Written 22 April 2018
Usually we can accept only over 5 years old, because the lesson is difficult for under 5 years old.
But if you want to let him join and don't mind it's difficult for him, he could join.
(Sometimes under 5 years old join the lesson)
Please understand If kids join the lesson, a adult have to join together.
Thank you.

Do you think any of the classes would be safe for someone pregnant in second trimester?
Written 30 September 2017
You should be fine. Just opt out of the one or two activities you’re not up to, if any.
Even the instructor combat stuff is done gently and very slowly... I think you’re fine.
This baby is going to be born with ninja training! How cool is that? :)

Help please! Just wondering what people would recommend for a 7.5 year old boy who is not hyperactive and has good concentration in general. The 1 hour or 2 hour session?? Would the 2 hour one be too long or does the time whizz by?? Can't decide!
Written 26 June 2017
The Time did whizz by. The instructor tried to cover everything in 1hr. 2hr would give you a lot more time on the stars and blowgun!
