Neighbourhood: Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A very unique and distinctive shrine that sits at the division of two paths in the Gion District. Very easy to miss actually a little hard to peer into this shrine at night. Unless you take a tour of the Gion District you could easily miss this miniature shrine that has a interesting legend on why this shrine was built in this area. Interesting enough if you happen to pass by but not enough to go out of your way for.

I often appear in suspense theater shoots. It is called "Tatsumi Daimyojin" because it is located in the direction of Tatsumi (southeast) from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and was originally a shrine protecting the southeast direction. Located on the banks of the Gion Shirakawa River, it is highly worshipped by the people of Gion, and you can often see geisha and maiko holding hands especially in hopes of improving their arts.

Enjoyed this bit of tranquility amidst the busy tourist filled streets.
love the fact that this Shinto Shrine is specifically to support and protect the entertainment and geisha district.
Watch out for the speeding taxi cabs who seemed very inpatient and rather un-japanese.
guess the volume of tourists got to them.

This charming little shrine is on the corner of Shinbashi and Shirakawa Minami Dori. If you are visiting this beautiful old part of Kyoto, look out for it as you could miss it, with so many other lovely buildings to distract you.

I happened upon it while in the Gion district and took a few photos only to run across them when returning home. There seem to be quite a few small shrines around Kyoto. I did not know the significance of this one until later. Gion is very distracting.

This small , traditional shrine is located at hte corner of Shirakawa-Minami Dori and Shinbashi Dori AKA "The Geisha Triangle" . Here you may find lot of photo ops of young Maidens , girls and even guys , wearing traditional (rented) Kimonos , coming to pray here at the lovely tiny shrine , with their loved ones , enabling you to enjoy using your cameras . Some of of may agree that you join into the frame . Beautiful and colorful .
Don't miss the little adjecent bridge .

A Shrine I made an effort to visit.
Just a few steps away from Shijo-Diri.
Beautiful in it's simplicity.
Not crowded too which is a rarity in the Gion District

Visited on April 6th. This is a very small shrine located right next to Tatsumi Bridge on the Shirakawa River in Gion. It is just a few steps from the torii gate to the shrine. The cherry blossoms stretch out over the torii gate and shrine, and we were able to pray under the cherry blossoms in full bloom.
