Top ways to experience Kansai Tourist Information Center Kyoto and nearby attractions
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

We accidentally booked a weekend trip to Kyoto on the busy Labor Thanksgiving weekend (Nov 23) in Japan. The team at Kansai Tourist Information Center Kyoto (KTIC) went over and above their call of duty to make sure we had a great experience.
They set us up with all the money saving trains passes and information we needed for us to visit the Kurama Onsen (very nice hot spring/public bath) outside Kyoto. They made all our dinner and lunch reservations (most places were full given the Thanksgiving holiday but they persisted until they found places for e.g. a traditional Kaiseki meal in Kibune, a great lunch in Kyoto etc.). They had excellent attention to detail - something your family friend would do - for instance - they considered the weather report when suggesting when to visit the Onsen, wrote us a note in Japanese to hand to our restaurant after dinner asking for a ride back to the local train station so we could come back to Kyoto, printed us custom maps telling us where to go, where to get off, how long to walk etc. so that we can easily reach our destination and get back to our hotel at night. They even helped us with our Haruka (express train) tickets back to the airport.
Excellent team and help in English made it very easy for us. I would recommend stopping by the KTIC to plan your journey. All in all this one stop gave us all the information we needed to enjoy Kyoto. They are located right opposite the JR Kyoto station at the Kyoto Tower.

We decided to check out Kyoto Tower after missing out on seeing Tokyo Tower.
Our lucky day !!
The staff working in the Info Tourist Centre in the same building were amazingly helpful and knowledgeable. Everyone there had great English, nothing was too hard. Our trip to Mt Fuji was booked in 15 mins (Thanks Michelle M)!!
Make this your first stop in Kyoto!!! Head north out of Kyoto station.
The Tower view was pretty good too.

Takes a little time to find; across the road from the main station at Kyoto. Helpful English speaking staff. We purchased the Kansai Thru Pass here. Cash only.

I only found Kansai Tourist information center on the 2nd day of my trip and in my opinion it was a day late. I should have visited here as soon as i arrived. The people were very courteous and helpful. They provided guides and tip and provided suggestions. You can also purchase your daily passes here. A must visit before you start you Kyoto visit.

If you're going to go around the different temples, get a day-pass for buses. It is well worth it, basically riding twice is already the same price and you don't have to carry change.

The office is situated just across the train station. The lady is incredibly helpful. They arranged us a tea ceremenoy which turned out to be great. They also suggested a place to buy kimono and a place to eat. They have maps of all the cities in the area.

I visited a couple of times in the fall of 2015. Both times the staff was friendly and helpful. Both staff members had grown up in North America, which made it easy to communicate. Compared to the Kyoto Tourism office in the station, the Kansai office had much more info in English. It also has info on a broader range of places, including lesser known prefectures near Kyoto. It is located on the third floor of Kyoto Tower, but you don't have to go to the tower to go to the office.

After a cruise around Japan in September, we spent 8 days in Kyoto to explore the city and the Kansai region, including Osaka and Nara. As we were on our own, our first stop after getting off the Shinkansen from Yokohama was the visitor information centre in the Kyoto station. We picked up all sorts of maps and booklets, but when it came to booking tours and visits, we were told that our best resource would be the Kansai Tourist Information Center in the Kyoto Tower Building across the street. When we got there, we got a warm welcome from the Office Manager Yo Koitani and his staff, who could book on the spot two city tours, a visit to Nara and a one-day walking tour of Osaka. Efficiency at its best, and great advice on shopping and restaurants, all with a winning smile from the manager's assistants Asami Yabu and Haruna Michelle Montpetit. Simply said, a great team which gives its full meaning to the concept of service. So much to see in this wonderful city.

Hi, I would like to know which other places in Kansai would suit me, after I have spent a week in Kyoto: I am looking for a rural place with a different vibe to Kyoto. Needs to be easy to get around and I will be travelling on my own. I am interested in art, culture, history, but also rural lifestyles, craft, and love to trek, as long as not too arduous. I am thinking of buying a Kansai train pass. I will be visiting in the first two weeks of February.
Also, is it difficult to visit Hiroshima from Kyoto?
Thanks for your help,
Regards,
Deb

Ms. Debenchine, We are so sorry..... to be really late to notice your message...
If you are still staying in Kyoto and you didn’t see rural place,
we recommend "Miyama" in north side of Kyoto perf.
It takes 1 hour 40 min. by JR train and bus from Kyoto station.
For art, I recommend "Naoshima" .
This is a small Island located between Kyoto to Hiroshima.
If you have time, Please visit to our information center on 3rd floor in Kyoto tower.
We can make your plane and give some information and maps.
If you need help we can make a reservation all transportation too.
we hope you enjoy Japan.
Thanks for your message
Regards,
Uchitani
