I found this walking group online about 3 weeks before we planned to arrive in Osaka. I filled in an online application, giving details of our preferred date and time for the tour and information about the number of us in our travel party. I got an almost instant confirmation email with the details about when and where to meet our guide. Very straightforward.
I think the day before our tour was to take place we also got a reminder email confirming the details again.
Our small party of four arrived in Osaka at the cruise ship terminal and caught our own local taxi to the tour meeting point just outside the port costing us about £20. There were buses and rail options available as well, for less money obviously, however as ‘oldies’ and with limited travel time available to us it was the easiest and quickest way for the four of us to get there.
Anyway we arrived at the appointed time and place as arranged with the tour organisation which was in front of Apple Store in Shinsaibashi area of Osaka.
As we waited we met and chatted with several other people also waiting there for the same tour. It was a mixed group of people, various nationalities of young and old, all speaking or at least understanding English. In total I think it was a party of about 15, maybe 20 people.
Our guide Lucy, a lovely Australian student studying in Japan, arrived in good time to gather us all together and start our tour.
The tour took about 2 hours, if I remember correctly, and was paced really well to allow us to look around and enjoy everything around us . We stopped at several points for the guide to explain about the different areas we walked through. Any questions we had she answered really well, giving us details and explanations of so many things.
Before the tour we had no details of what or where we were going to see, maybe that changes depending upon the particular guide you get, anyway this tour certainly did not disappoint. We met at a busy shopping street, full of big well known shops and motor vehicles, but walked away from all that into colourful side streets, full of local shops culture and restaurants. We went through narrow side streets, visited a local shrine, walked through covered market streets and walked beside the local canal with small bridges stopping occasionally throughout for Lucy to explain about what we were seeing and experiencing.
Finally at the end of our tour we still had plenty of time to do our own thing before we needed to head off back to our ship.
This is described as a tip based tour, but as the tour organisation state - for each booking taken their partners ‘byFood’ donates 10 meals to children in need around the world so we personally felt we should include a donation to the organisation within our tip. We spoke to our guide about this and so felt comfortable doing so. I suggest you do the same.
Finally all in all I can definitely recommend this tour. Book it!
