The Pasig River reflects all that's problematic with Manila: dirty, trashy, filthy.... and with no political commitment to set it right. Over the years, there have been endless campaigns to remove squatters from the banks of the river, stop the dumping of trash in the stream, control the flow of raw sewage, even set up passenger ferry/taxi service ala Bangkok's Chao Phraya river. Mostly, all failed attempts, which tell us more about the politics and inability of Filipino "leaders" to address the country's ills than all the books and reports one can read on the subject. Sad testimony!

I really pity this river that is located in the wrong place and at the right time...In the wrong place because all the sewer water of the Metro Manila flows down into its stream...The smell is not pleasant if you are near the river...The current of this river "changes" as water rises in the bay...If the Manila Bay is rising then the current will be flowing back to the city or else vice-versa...At the right time because this river is the main channel for business mobility around the area...Although it is what it is right now, rich history surrounded this river in all ages...

This review is quite late. I grew up in the City of Manila were the Pasig River is part of our day to day life. From Pandacan we cross the Pasig River to Punta in Sta. Ana aboard a small boat. It is a dying river because of pollution. It is good that some people are seriously doing some efforts to save the Pasig River.

The main arterial waterway in Manila supplemented by Its major tributaries, the Marikina and San Juan Rivers. Its importance to the capital was often mentioned by our tour guide although he overlooked the pollution resulting from untreated sewerage, industrial waste and general rubbish. A cleanup is underway by the authorities, the water currently unsuitable for swimming. It is still a very important resource for the city, playing a critical role in the management of drainage and flood control.

Before arriving in Manila I read that the River Pasig Ferry had resumed service. I went to Plaza Mexico where I was told, that the ferry didn´t exist any more. Strolling around I all of a sudden saw a ferry terminal behind the Buro of Imigration where an old little ferry ( They called it a ferry bus) just arrived. I bought a ticket to Guadalupe for 50 PHP O/W and got on board. The Pasig river is indeed fairly polluted and wáter lillies are floating down river together with bottles, plastic bags, paper......you name it, even a dead pigeon, but the smell wasn´t bad. The Pasig river winds thru Manila and here is what I really liked about the trip. We passed places you wouldn´t see if not on the river and I got a glimpse of how the other half of Manila´s population lives. Many barely had a roof over their head, other lived in small, colorful cottages or huts. Small children swam and played happily in the river and all along the Banks stood men fishing. Closer to Guadalupe one could see the highrises as a Sharp contrast to the small houses. During the journey we also passed several smaller churches, the new (former?) ferries, about 6-8 of them parked by the river and even the Presidents Palace situated on both sides of river Pasig ( Attention - It´s stricktly forbidden to take photos or videos of the palace !). Once you arrive in Guadalupe you can either take a taxi back or return by ferry bus - the latter is probably faster due to the heavy traffic in the city. The return ticket to Intramuros/Plaza Mexico can be bought at the terminal/station for another 50 PHP.

Pasig river is a dead river, nothing can live in it. The water is very polluted from human and industrial waste. I lived in a subdivision near to river, and the locals say, that if you drop into the water, you are as good as dead. The water is brown and smelly.

This is the Manila's river ''the Pasing River'' you can see it through and out of Intramuros from the north-west side, frankly it was a gruesome spectacle, I have never seen in my life a river so dirty and polluted like this one.
A very large stream which was entirely covered with floating objects of all kinds, such as plastic bottles, waste wood of all kinds, a total dump and a nauseating stench from being sick.
This is a real shame, I think that we all should have much more respect of nature.

I think this river runs all the way to the road leading to china town and if this is the same river infront of Intromuros then it's a total mess and stinks too.
At intromuros it is not as bad as lower down the street with the Binondo church. In that side it's really smelly and you can see kids on in defecating in it . It's filled with garbage and seriously needs to be cleaned.

everytime i see pasig river it looks clean but if i see in personal, too dirty, not blue, dirty, thrashy and one of the reason why manila is polluted, too many dumped garbage flowing everyday, needs improvement, i hope it will redevelope

This river is not a tourist destination, due to the pollution and all the floating trash. You can see raw sewage being dumped into the river everyday, watch children swimming in the river in some areas, while trash floats by or is cough on something. The smell is very bad, better on someday, worse on others.
Why would anyone was to see a river that is nothing more then a dumb for sewage, and trash. The river is also lines with squatters who use the rive as they a place to dump their raw sewage and trash.
