dangerous. people outside of random buildings wave menus in your face on the road and its a serious security risk if you do not oblige.

roads are dangerous with no proper pavements to walk on.

August 2023 they have decided to block off the bay walk for unknown reasons.

The entire area is totally set up to fleece any foreigner who is minding their own business walking along one of their roads.

dangerous area and not recommended if you are not familiar with this kind of place in Asia. If you are familiar then expect to have a shabby time for maximum spend.

I love it here
Pure chaos, sizzeling part of town to walk around in. Not during the day, for me only the mall(robinsons) is worth hanging around a bit in then. But at night: life as it is in the real world. I got stuck here for 6 days due to the volcano eruption, enjoyed it nevertheless. Come and feel, see, sense,...

I rented an Airbnb in this part of Manila for its views of Manila Bay and easy access to shops, fresh fruit and vegetables, and bars. Wonderful, friendly people and a true adventure into the Filipino culture

Malate is a good to explore neighborhood and as a foreigner you are offered all kinds of legal (and illegal) items for sale here when you walk around.

There are many many small hole in the wall restaurants in this area but none so far that I've found that are really anything worth "writing home about". It is extremely difficult to find just a calm and quiet sit down place unless you eat at the Sheraton or a decent hotel restaurant.Booth type seating is very uncommon and often you are inches away from other people eating and able to hear each other.

The mall is the unofficial center of all activity here and is non-stop packed with people all day.

Be careful when crossing the street and always pay super close attention to motorcycles, jeepneys, bicycles, regular cars, and messed up sidewalks which can have irregular steps or holes.

It's very hard to find any kind of healthy meals around here as well as nearly everything is deep fried made in a non healthy way.

Many establishments open late and it's difficult to find any places open before 8 or even 9am.

Check your money exchange rates as the offered rates vary wildly from place to place.

Spent 2 nights, 2 days around this area of Manila. It’s quite an old neighbourhood but can be interesting for a walk about. There are quite a few bars, restaurants, etc and besides Filipino fare there is a lot of Korean and Arabic food. Some cheap eats and basic restaurant nothing too flash. Manila bay is close as are a few old churches, Ritan park and Intramuros so it’s a decent place to be based location wise to look about. There’s also the big and popular Robinson mall nearby - good to escape to midday when it’s far too hot to be outside. At night the place changes as a couple of streets turn into popular girly bar and disco areas. Not my scene but seemed popular with locals and foreigners when I wandered past. You can also find plenty of bats for a cold San Miguel or Red horse.

It’s not the cleanest area and you’ll see some poverty but that’s part of Manila. As a male I found it safe enough but not sure I’d recommend the area for girls to be solo at night.

I'm staying in a 52 story AirBNB condo in this district - I've been here at least a dozen times. It's worth it to read the already-posted reviews - the mixed descriptions of realism and potential, poverty with wealth, excitement with disappointment is very accurate. This area has it all, depending on what you're looking for. At the very least, it's a fascinating to place to walk around, especially at night. The location makes it easy to keep taxi fares under control to NAIA, and make visits to other museums, malls, civic parks, take bay walks, or to simply dwell in the sea of entertainment here. Bring your street smarts and you'll be okie.

Having stayed here several times now I guess I am used too and familiar with the area.
For the first timers it is a good base point.
A lot of places around cater for foreign nationals although mostly Korean however there is something for all. A few good bars around one of which I frequent is the Tambayan which has a great happy hour, food and some light live entertainment.
The main mall here is called Robinson’s place and is large enough to have a great choice for shoppers and there are many restaurants, cinema and bowling alley (the latter being closed for renovation as I write).
Yes the area is busy like any place in Manila but you are only minutes away from the bay front and a 20 minute walk to one of the main parks and museums area called Rizal.
Close by there is an aqua park that has live seal interaction amongst other things of interest.
Transport links are good and traffic permitting you are only 20 minutes or so from the airport. There is a shuttle bus for the airport outside the main mall.
I like the place and it has been my hub when traveling here on many occasions.
Enjoy

i came back to this place at end of 2018,
and the place looks even more exciting and fun and interesting now.
So many japanese and chinese and korean restaurants ,
with delicious food.
The places i love most are the many exciting and fun Japanese + korean + chinese+ filipino ktvs,
with many pretty pretty filipina girls or entertainers inside,
providing singing and dancing and chatting and entertainment for you,
to pass a pleasant evening away,
and these places welcomed customers of any race or nationality ,
but are frequented mostly by Japanese and east asian people.
Be prepared to spend 500 pesos to 3000 pesos each when you go to such ktvs.
There are also many western type clubs in malate ,
which are less expensive than the ktvs.
I did also see some discos around Remedios circle area,
and these discos are visited mostly by young korean and east asian men and young filipina girls.
Robinsons place manila shopping mall is a very interesting and nice shopping mall,
and its so huge that u would need a few hours from morning till night to slowly explore all the shops.
Staying in a rented apartment nearby or in hotels nearby here is a good idea,
since it is easy to bring the grocery from the Robinsons supermarket inside the shopping mall back to where u are staying .
Manila bay where the sea is ,is just a short walk from Robinsons place manila shopping mall.
If u love night life and clubbing and ktvs and dancing and singing and pretty girls,
or if u are the type that cannot sleep at night,
this is a paradise for you,
because many clubs open till 3 am morning or even later,
and many restaurants especially the japanese and korean and chinese restaurants remain open even at 4 am morning .
There are so many schools and universities nearby,
and the Philippine General hospital and many clinics are nearby.
There are many money changers in this area,
but the money exchanger that i feel is the most honest and which gives very good rates is the Edzen Enterprises Money Changer, along mabina street,
and they always give me the correct exact amount every time.
The only thing i dont quite like here is the smokey , noisy polluting jeepneys,
which gives off awful black smoke,
so i hope these jeepneys can be replaced by cleaner electric or other vehicles soon,
and i also hope the beggars and street kids can be given a better place to stay ,
rather than being on the streets.

What you get here is not the sanitized lonely planet version of Manilla. You will see child beggars, hookers and families living on the street. You can almost taste the poverty and desperation of some people. Luckily I'm not one of these people and through the luck of birth im a western tourist who looks at malate as a slice of life as I enjoy the cheap decent hotels, great bars and restaurants like the star of manilla, bedrocks, and la cafe. I've walked about on my own late at night and I've never been hassled by anyone apart from some dirty looking kids wanting a few pesos. This place is not entirely safe but there are parts of my home town which are not entirely safe either. Go to Malate and see life. Its an eye opening experience but that's what life is all about. That's why we travel to the other side of the world.
