Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My friend and I were walking around Old Town Alexandria and bumped into this place. I love old buildings and they were showcasing an art exhibit. The exhibit was very interesting and the building was amazing. I can see this building being an amazing place to host a wedding reception as well as country dancing.

The Atheneum in Alexandria, Virginia, has served a number of purposes since it was built in 1851-52. Located at the intersection of Lee and Prince Streets, the building originally housed the Bank of the Old Dominion, where Robert E. Lee once had an account. Later, it hosted the First Virginia Bank, a pharmaceutical wholesaler, the Free Methodist Church of North America and the Washington School of Ballet. In 1964, it became the home of the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association for use as a gallery of fine arts and performance venue. It was designated a Virginia Landmark in 1979 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Most of all, it is a marvelous example of Greek Revival architecture with its majestic portico and tall columns, one of only two such structures in Alexandria. Among the current exhibitions are artist Barbara Januszkiewicz's elegant paintings and the Washington Sculptors Group's Notes of Color.

The Athenaeum is an impressive-looking old neoclassical building in Old Town Alexandria. You can go inside and it's free, but there's nothing to see except a rotating art exhibit with art by local artists. It's small - one room with about a dozen paintings when I visited.

We attended a wedding at this venue. The space is small but we were comfortable enough as the food was passed by servers. And there was enough space for everyone to dance. There is no parking at the venue. You have to find parking on the street. It's lovely and quaint.

We attended a wedding reception and were delighted with the place. Although it's small it can comfortably seat 120 persons. The place has a lot of character and the caterer served an outsranding barbecue buffet with baby back ribs, beef brisket, pulled chicken, mac and cheese, coleslaw, corn bread, etc., delicious food. A great time was had by all.

We stopped by on a self-tour of Alexandria. We wanted to see the building itself. There was a free art exhibit inside, too. The docent was friendly and helpful, and shared information about Alexandria with us. Definitely worth a 30 minute stop in. (Especially if Oscar the pup is there.)

A small art museum, with exhibitions of local artists changing often. Well worth a visit. If you time it right, you can walk in on a reception. Check their website to see what's going on.

The rotation of various artists makes this place special. It is a nice space and special events are very worthwhile. It is in a neighborhood so one gets to see a lot of history in the building and around the neighborhood.

There is not a lot to see unless they are having a special exhibit or some sort of recital. It is a lovely old building, not far off of King Street, so if you are into architecture of the Civil War era it might be worth your while to swing by.
