About
In the spring, the Kawachi Fuji Gardens open their Wisteria tunnels to the public. Wisteria, lauded in Japanese poetry, bloom strongest between April and May. The Kawachi Fuji Wisteria are especially lovely, as the hundred-year old trees are arranged to blossom around domes and trellises, with clusters of flowers hang down in delicate rows, leaving only patches of streaming sunlight in between. The magical sight attracts visitors from all over the world. Over twenty species of Wisteria compose the two main tunnels, one 260 feet long, and the other 720 feet long. Each features an explosion of petals from lavender to deep royal purple, with bursts of pink, blue, and white in between.

We journeyed to this garden from Hakata to Yahata where we located the "free" bus to the Onsen (spa) but would have had to wait an hour for it so we found another couple and shared a cab. The cost ($12.00 one way) was worth it. We got to the garden in about 10 minutes and so were able to enjoy the walk through the tunnels instead of waiting for a bus.
We visited on May 8, 2014 and there were still lots of wisteria in bloom. The tunnels were stunning and the "plaza" at the top of the hill was filled with long purple, pink and whites....and lots of bees busy doing their thing and did not interfere with our enjoyment of the garden. The soft pinks, the double purples and the brilliant white wisteria were well worth the taxi ride and the entry fee. Highly recommended if nigh impossible to find.

No where in any website mentioned that the garden is open only for a very short period of the year. From mid Apr to mid May. We went there on 12 Jun and it was shut. There isn't any flowers too. All you see was green. So we were left disappointed after driving more than an hour there. So do take note of the season.

Really beautiful. I was here in May 2013, and the pictures on the internet don't do the garden justice - the smell was incredible, and they have the biggest bees I've possibly ever seen! Very highly recommended. Not the easiest place to get to, but here's how to do it: First, take a train to JR Yahata station. Then you have two options: 1. take local bus* no.56 and get off at Kawachi Elementary School, then walk west (the bus will drop you in the middle of nowhere, but a short walk up a slight incline brings you to Kawachi reservoir, which has some really nice views - the garden is perhaps 20 minutes' walk from there), or 2. Take the free shuttle bus from the station to ajisai no yu onsen (the shuttle bus stop is not signposted - to find it walk out of Yahata station and go left toward the bus stops, the shuttle bus stops by the little patch of grass just past where the no.56 bus stops) - the journey takes 10-15 minutes; once you've reached the onsen, cross over the road and walk up the hill - the garden is 2 minutes away (if that). Entrance fee was in the region of 1,000 yen per person. Perhaps a little steep, but well worth it.

(* Bus company beginning with 'Nishi' and ending 'tetsu' (にしてつ). Believe it or not, the profanity filter wouldn't let that through...!)

I visited there in 9 May 2014
I think this year flower bloomed a bit early but on the date of my visit there are still quite lots of flower especially on the upside hill while flower in the tunnel zone already fallen like 40 percents already.

First stop is wisteria tunnel where the flower have grown with few different colors from white to purple. Next is the way to climb up the hill, here you can see the view of mountain and another flowers and trees which also a nice scenary. There will be wisteria globe like a small round cave that will full-covered with the flower but unlucky me that on the period that I visited the flower at the globe almost faded.
Then to the top of hill [area for the wisteria ceiling] there are pretty full of flower which make me feel like I have entered to the purple wonderland! So many local people went to take a rest, sitting and chatting there. The atmosphere is super gorgeous! So relax and beautiful. Especially when the wind blow, the fragances of fuji no hana spread all the area which make me feel so calm and fresh.
Next if you follow the way you will go down to the entrance. Along the way down still cover with the flower too and also very lovely!

Things to be aware, if you are the person that fear of bee and insect please kindly aware of giant bee [so big!] when you walk through the wisteria ceiling or taking a photo because they drop quite long and your head could be touched and bee are always around.

The price of ticket may vary up on the period due to the blooming of the flower.

It should be really really like a heaven if it is full bloom!

Another place to visit for this lovely magical spell!

I got the brochure and it state that in the autumn period here is also the place for consuming the color-changed leaves which sound good to.

The area of the garden is quite big over my expectation and the recommended length of visit is up to the person which how you prefer the flower/ travel by yourself or with friend or with group tour/ your plan and activity.

We have visited the Garden in April this year and found that there were lots and lots of different flowers blosooming beautifully in the season. Furthermore the place is recommended for all people including small child to elderly in the wheelchair. You can find supplementary facilities around including food, sitting area in the shade and washrooms while you are snapshooting with flower photos from all angles.

Basically there were 3 parts in the garden, 1. long tunnel at the entrance with wisteria in white and different type of purple, 2. a igloo shape flower "rack" with one single purple wisteria, 3. a flat ceiling of 2 type of wisteria. So spend your time well and don't just stuck in the tunnel if you are not having plenty of time. The entrance fee JPY1000 is well worth it when you think about they can charge the fee only less than 1 month in the year. It's not easy to go there except you leverage the free ride offered by the onsen nearby which departed at the JR Yahata station and it takes about 25 mins from Yahata to the onsen. To secure your seat in the van, recommend you also paid a visit to the onsen as the charge per person indeed was just JPY850. Lastly, 3 - 6 May is the peak travel season for Kyushu and the hotel room rate is highest in this week, so you may avoid it if you have a choice.

I came all the way from Canada and visited the garden on April 24, but only 1% is in full bloom. I would strongly advice people to go during the first week of May. For those that are interested in going: once you get out Yahata station, gear left. The Kawachi's shuttle is at the end of the bus loop. It starts at 9:00 am and l think it's every 20 minutes. This is what l would do in future: l would come during the golden week at 8 :00am . I would arrive Yahata station around 7:15 am and take the taxi (2700 yen). Taxi takes about 16 minutes. I will wait at the entrance till it opens at 8:00am. Once l finished the garden around 10 am, l would walk (turn left when you exit the garden) to the Aji sai no you onsen (opens at 10 am). Time yourself so you take the free hourly onsen shuttle back to Yahata. Do ask for bus tickets from the counter. If you don't want to go to the onsen, take the free Kawachi shuttle bus (you don't need ticket) back to Yahata. If after the onsen, you realize you just miss the bus, can walk back to the garden to see if the Kawachi shuttle is busy. If you happen to go when it's fully bloom, you are very fortunate!

I was there during the Golden week weekend, and it so happened that the wisterias had fully blossomed! Alas it was also extremely crowded and difficult to get there!

From hakata station it was a one hour train ride to yahata station. Once there, you either take the free onsen shuttle bus which goes to the onsen and then u get off and walk 300m to the garden, or take a public bus (260yen). The onsen bus runs hourly and is tiny, so it was impossible to get a free ride as the queue was crazy long. I ended up taking the public bus 56. It is a loop service so u disembark at the last stop. However, given that it was golden week, there were many many cars making their way there as well so the bus ride took 1hour instead of 15mins.

After disembarking, we had to walk 3km up to the gardens, which took another 1hour, but it was definitely faster than all the cars which were caught in the crazy long jam. Once there, it cost 1000yen for entry as it was peak period. The wisterias were really pretty and though it was worth the effort, i think i might go elsewhere next time to view wisterias.

I went there earlier in May (around Golden Week time) since that's the best time around for the park. It's not too early for the flowers to bloom but not late enough for them to wither. I went with my friends and we had a BLAST. Not only for our own road trip but also the view was AMAZING!

Before you get to the park you will pass a lake and mountains and the view!!! The view definitely makes you want to stay there forever.

If you're interested, you can go rowing in the river I assume, I'm not sure though, you probably have to ask around first.

When we get to the park, there was A LOT of people (again, Golden Week), but the flowers and the tunnels were breathtaking! We took loads of pictures there and everyone seemed to be very satisfied as well.

Since the park basically have NOTHING but the flowers and tunnels, I recommend you bring lunch box and mats and do picnic there (a lot of people do it too)

Overall, this is definitely a must-go place, at the right time of course!

I had seen pictures of this magical places and specifically planned a visit to Fukuoka to see it. The Wisteria were gorgeous, although the color wasn't as vivid as in some pictures. The places was very very crowded, but well worth it. The view of the mountains around and the drive there were also gorgeous, adding to the charm of the place.
