Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An absolute "must" - the ascent to Assekrem with spectacular sunset and ascent! Pay attention to a solid agency with a strong 4×4 and experienced driver (e.g. Akar- Akar Voyage with experience since 1970!), because many cars do not make the arduous way.
And wrap up very warm! At an altitude of 3,000 meters, the wind blows sharply and the night is incredibly cold. Again, it is important that your agency has booked the accommodation well in advance and provides additional sleeping bags, blankets, seating, etc.
Enjoy the ascent and dedicated lectures of the 3 clergy on the Asekrem,
Eure Regina

Unforgettable panoramic views can be enjoyed at Assekrem in Tamanrasset, particularly during sunrise or sunset. The journey there is challenging due to rugged terrain, but the tranquility and beauty once you arrive make it worthwhile. Bring plenty of water and snacks, as amenities are limited. Nature lovers who seek awe-inspiring landscapes should definitely visit this place.

This is a high volcanic mountain (no, no crater, but lava rocks everywhere) high in the Ahaggar National Park. A very isolated location where some monks study the weather.

The road from Tamanrasset is 15 minutes of paved road, and 3 hours of variable track, some pretty smooth, but other very hard on the vehicle. Our driver was a champion at dodging stones! Not much wild life see aside from a few donkeys and domestic camels. The views are beautiful all along.

Staying in Assekrem is really only for the hard core camper as there is very little support (no water with all the hygiene implications one can envision). I spend a hard night in a dormitory and was rapidly convinced to go to more comfortable locations.

On the way, one can see a pretty oasis (actually, more the source of a river that goes back underground) called Afilal. There is, closer to Tamanrasset, another source with "sparkling water" that tasted pretty good.

I feel as though I am so far away from civilization as one can get, in this part of the world called Assekrem. The name Assekrem means the end of the world, which is entirely appropriate for the landscape that it projects. This is the meeting point for all visitors to Algeria, hoping to visit Assekrem, which is now a world heritage site.
During the day this part of the world is a waterless, inhospitable environment, a surreal, otherworldly landscape of volcanic looking rock formations that rise hundreds of metres vertically into the sky.
The stunning scenery, being in the desert and sleeping under the stars at night, is hard to describe. I am mesmerized at times, as I feel it is a trip to another world, where it is sweltering during the day, and then cold at night, maybe be barren, but always full of life.
We all sleep under a million stars, and I feel they are just above my head. The headscarf that I wear, known as a Cheche, was a bit awkward at times, eventually becomes so soothing, protecting from the wind, sand, and sun.
Today, the solitude leaves the Sahara largely uninhabited, save the nomadic Tuareg, reliant entirely on their herds and their ability to endure hardships that would destroy most people in a couple of days. I feel the outdoors does not get much greater.
We have now traveled over 1000 miles without any incidents, and the 4x4 Toyota Landcruiser does struggle over rocks, potholes, more huge rocks, and sand and still keeps ongoing.

Assekerem is located at northern section of Ahaggar National Park in the sahara desert. the park extends north and south of Tamanrasset but foreigners are only permitted to visit the northern section.

for foreigners,
- since early 2023, Assekrem is open every day for visit, not just wed and sun.
- there is mandatory registration with local police, airport police (if applicable), and gendarmerie 72 hours before visit.
- officially, escort is required throughout stay but not enforced consistently in reality.

the standard tour offered on Assekrem appears to be 3 days. however, a day trip is possible. i did 2 days and 1 night in order to see sunset and sunrise at summit, then spent most of day 2 exploring other non-volcanic areas of the park.

to see sunset, you hike 15-20 min from Assekrem base up to Ermitage de Charles Foucauld then turn left. to see sunrise, you dont make a left but remain at the vicinity of Ermitage. there is also a service road for vehicles but it is not open to public. currently there are 2 monks residing at the Ermitage, one from Spain, another from Poland.

for self drivers
- Assekrem is located 80 km north from Tamanrasset. 30 km paved (45 min) and 50 km offroad or piste (1h45m). the short detour to Guelta Afilial is along the way.
- the piste consists of good gravel, corrugated gravel, and bad gravel / bad dirt with rocks and potholes. the worst section is the final 5-10% as you approach Assekrem
- the incline is not too bad. it is possible to do the entire trip in 2WD high clearance vehicle. i would say 95% is a definite 2WD while remaining 5% is 4WD engaged for insurance purpose.
- there is another piste you can take to Assekrem, from Hirhafok. this route is in much worse condition, definitely requires 4WD, and rarely used, except by some intrepid self-drivers who want to bypass gendarmerie who more commonly ply the piste from Tamanrasset

for fly in visitors
- price for tour is dependent on the number of travel days in the desert.
- in general, expect to pay around 85-120 euros per day (solo). price is sometimes quoted in euros, sometimes in dinars, so i have accounted that by converting from dinars using parallel rate. standard inclusives are one night at refuge at Assekrem (or tent + mattress at other times), meals, 4x4 vehicle, park fees, and a guide + a cook + a driver accompanying throughout the journey. extras are flights to/from Tamanrasset and one night stay at hotel (this is sometimes included due to flight time)

at the time of writing, Nov 2023,
1 EUR = 1.10 USD
1 EUR = 147 DZD (official), 235 DZD (parallel)
1 USD = 135 DZD (official), 217 DZD (parallel)

Assekrem reminds me a lot of Iceland (lava rock, desolate volcanic surroundings, etc), so it wasnt as special as i expected. there are sand dunes in Ahaggar National Park, but they are located further away.

happy planning

For the moment you need an police escort in order to ride until this mystical place , from Tamanrasset it s 75 km , I advice you to book one night at the mountain hostel , you have to book via local agency , It s more than worth it it s unique , out of time , magical, climb on top and visit the Père Foucauld house , do the walk for sunset And sunrise

Was fantastic getting to the top, spending the night in a dogdy dormitory was quite an experience!!!!
The road(use the word loosely) up to the top was scary and needed nerves of steel especially if you came across another car

I was there in the late '70s. We made a 5-day tour of the Hoggar Mountains from Tamanrasset. Our driver was a Touareg and knew his way around. Very fond memories.
