This is a typical museum about slavery and its roots. The best part of this one way museum is the last room. In the back room are the cravings of one of the most famous sculptures of his time. The 16 twenty foot plank cravings of the African religion are wonderful.

The current exhibit has amazing photography. The exhibit also highlights Salvador's relationship with Candomblé the Afro-Brazilian religious closely tied to Bahia.

This museum is in the historical central region ( Pelourinho) of Salvador. It is small but interesting and well worth a visit. The African wooden art exhibits by artist Carybe (Orixas) are alone worth the price of entry.

Check the schedule for special exhibits during your visit to Salvador
The museum is still in the process of being restored/ refurbished but there are parts tht can be visited

My husband and I went to the museum on a Monday morning and enjoyed the temporary exhibition. There were paintings done by a bailarina and that was her first exhibition ever. The museum itself we considered small. There is a beautiful room about Orixas with long wooden sculptures, must see.

MUNCAB - National Museum of Afro-Brazilian Culture is located in the central region of Salvador (BA) and its emphasis is on valuing aspects of African culture, highlighting its influence on Brazilian culture. It had fixed and temporary exhibitions showing the issue of trafficking in people who were enslaved; of black resistance, quilombos and revolts. You also learn about contributions to cuisine, religion and popular festivals, as well as sports and music. There is Mímu Cafeteria managed by an independent female collective, with support from the Secretariat of Labor, Employment, Income and Sports of the Government of Bahia.
