Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Right by Porto do Barra beach, perhaps Salvador best urban (and often crowded) beach, is this interesting fortification.
With nice views from the inside, it allows you to inmerse in the local history.

Located right next to the Porto da Barra beach, most tourists walk right past the Fort, not realizing it contains amazing historical context.

One ticket gets you admission to the museum located inside Forte Santa Maria as well as the Forte São Diogo (free on Wednesdays).

The exhibit is billed as a exposition for the French photographer turned Brazilian national Pierre Verger, but it's really so much more. Certainly, the exhibit showcases many, many of his candomblé photos taken in Salvador and greater Bahia, but it is also filled with countless historical photos of Salvador.

There are also a couple of interactive exhibits where you can see how Salvador looked throughout various points in it's history, dating all the way back to the early 1900s.

If you love history or love portraiture, be sure you put this on your list.

The little "Forte de Santa Maria" had its construction started in 1614 - at the very same place of the ancient primitive port - and played important roles defending the city of Salvador on many occasions. The actual structure dates as far back as 1696 and, in 1938, was appointed as a Brazilian national heritage monument. Free entry from 10AM to 7PM daily On its ground floor, "Espaço Pierre Verger da Fotografia Baiana" may also be visited, from 11AM to 7PM (closed on Tuesdays) at a small entry fee. Enjoy!

Looks really nice- however the fort is super small, there's really no inside area. It's 5 real to enter and it's mainly for the view the back platform. We did not enter after finding out the price. We could see from the entrance area that there's wasn't much to see. Of course there were cannons.

This is the middle forte in Porto the Barra neighborhood. When walking from the Porto da Barra (Forte Sao Diogo) heading to Faol da Barra this is the fort you will find on the way.

It now houses a photography collection, some of Pierre Verger. It has a small shop and a nice enclosed terrace of the fort.

Cool visit if you're already on the coast. It has a beautiful view of the beach, with people having fun by the sea, views of the other lighthouses, which can also be visited on foot.
The place doesn't offer much to see, there isn't a museum, just the outside, with some cannons and the architecture itself. The cleanliness of the place leaves a lot to be desired. It must be used as a public bathroom at night, as during the day, it is guarded by military personnel at the entrance.
