About
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer, the Museum began construction in 1999 and was inaugurated on December 15, 2006. Today, it is a member of the Cultural Ensemble of the Republic and administered with funds from the Federal District Government (GDF). The National Museum of the Republic was already featured in the Brasilia Pilot Plan Report, prepared in 1957 by Lúcio Costa, and was designed to be part of the Southern Cultural Sector of the New Capital. The Museum represents an architectural synthesis of high modernity that makes up the monuments of the Esplanade of Ministries. Meeting point, visitation, inspiration, art appreciation and learning, we are open doors to receive you. We encourage curiosity, diverse looks and the sharing of ideas. Days and Hours of Operation: From Tuesday to Sunday. From 9h00 to 18h30.

It's more a showcase for Niemeyer's architecture than any kind of "museum." The disjointed exhibits inside are pretty pathetic. Still, the price is right (free), and it's worth 20 minutes to take a look at the architecture.
Pro tip: the bathrooms below have a water cooler -great place to refill your bottle of water. The heat can be oppressive in the concrete jungle of the capital, and places to get water in the center are few and far between.

Oscar Niemeyer was a great architect and this one of his masterpieces. The design is really unique and outstanding. Both outside and inside it is very beautiful. The exhibition I saw was also interesting.
Definitely a must see when you like architecture and art.

The visit here really was just that "for the architecture" (a product of Oscar Niemeyer's "creative architectural" style in the city with many such buildings designed by him but each with its own unique design). But yes, apart from the somewhat exciting nature of getting to enter like a "big dome" (by going up the ramp from outside) and walk around its spacious "wide-open" interior where there's also another "curve-shaped" ramp to the second floor (really a great space more so than you might think looking at it from outside), there was just nothing much impressive for me inside this museum among its "modern art" displays (seen at the time 3-D ones such as a model of a pile of snow or such & some big cloths or fabrics hanging from above as if after a wash, sketches & small paintings by some Japanese Brazilian artist with also some of his family photos from like decades ago, and abstract paintings by another artist on the second floor).
And nearby, actually just across the street from the small square that this museum is on, is the city's "main cathedral" Catedral Metropolitana (another "creative-designed" structure by Niemeyer) where you also enter by ramp as at this museum but in the "opposite way" of going down to the underground instead of going up as you do here.
So yes, with this one likely for most people just a "brief visit" mainly to admire its architecture (as it was for me), a great place I can suggest in the city for a museum which are actually not museums but "museum-like" places are JK Memorial (with great enlarged photos & miscellaneous displays about the life of a former president) & Palacio Itamaraty (with great "traditional-styled" furniture, paintings & sculptures on display to see on a "guided tour").

When I was there, it was mostly empty. The admission was free, but I pretty much got what I paid for. I am no art expert, but it all looked pretty second rate to me. What I say did not rate a visit.

It is very unusual place with very specific architecture, which create unusual atmosphere inside. It is hard to imagine better place for art exhibition.

Just across the street from the Metropolitan cathedral, the museum is worth a visit once you are there. The architecture is very appealing. It seemed to me like the museum doesn’t have a permanent collection, therefore you will see whatever they have as their temporary exhibit, mostly modern art. I liked “Contrapunto”, a collection of modern Brazilian artists on display until February 2018. I visited on a Saturday, there was not much people around, which gave me the opportunity to walk around at leisure. The carpet is a little worn, could use some upkeep. Very friendly staff, clean bathrooms. Free entrance, no museum shop. If you have been to the famous museums of big cities around the world, you certainly need to lower your expectations about this one, but I still believe it is worth a visit as one of Brasilia’s landmarks

The access to the museum is really easy, and ramps help even phisically challenged people to move around. public bathrooms are clean and neat, and air conditioning is never too cold in there. Not to mention that despite the great exhibitions, the museum is an art work itself!

Another increasingly iconic landmark of Brasilia, the National Museum is hard to miss! The building and surrounding plaza are perfectly scaled to give the sense of utter massiveness! A person feels minuscule as they approach this gigantic spaceship-like structure, and as you mount the ramp and head toward the entrance you get the sense you will soon be transported to outer space. The interior and exterior ramps only add to the orbital effect. Unfortunately, as other reviewers have mentioned, there simply isn't much in the way of exhibits inside, or at least not when I visited. Almost embarrassing for a "national" museum, but hopefully simply due to a transition in exhibits taking place at the time. Either way, entrance is free, and the building itself is well worth the visit while checking out the Catedral next door. Excellent photo opps.

With wide catwalks and modern architecture, it feels like you are in a Bond film. Interesting for a quick visit.

As an architect, I love the way this building fits in with the simple modernist features of the whole city. Having no big signs around, the building opens up like a puzzle. Unfortunately the circular inside could be better utilized and better lit somehow. But still a masterpiece for its time.
