So, i was really excited about the ideia of going by train from Ouro Preto to Mariana, and it was a really nice experience! My only advice is that if you wanna get the best view go on the right hand side of the train. I took the panoramic wagon and don't regret it, but i bought a one-way ticket... More

The ride is somewhat on the expensive side (40 Rs one way and 56Rs round trip, half price for students and seniors). However, it is comfortable and the views are astonishing. You can film most of the 1 hour ride, it is that beautiful. Engineering/construction of the railroad is also very impressive. If you just want to get to Mariana,... More

The train costs at least 40 Rs and takes an hour to get to MAriana. It is not a steam train, it is a usual train. It goes very slow and has a few attractiosn a long the way (nice sights, waterfalls etc.) It is ok, but from the local bus you have laos nice views, and it is much... More

I was hesitant about taking this train, because it is so expensive. However, they do have a student rate, so if you are a student or senior citizen (and perhaps young child--I don´t know since I don´t have children) you will get a half price discount. It´s still much cheaper to take the city bus but the train is more... More

It was a nice ride through the mountains however the train did not have a steam locomotive when I took it. Mariana was a nice place to spend a few hours.

As of time of writing, the Trem da Vale is operating with a diesel while the steam engine is being shopped in Mariana. No reliable word on when the Skoda steamer will be back on the 18 km run from Ouro Preto to Mariana. Nevertheless, it's a great trip and should not be missed if you have an affinity for... More

Although not dramatic the scenery is very nostalgic and I felt like going back in time. The train moves slowly which gives it a romantic feel. Kids love not only the tour itself but also the train station in Mariana where there is a fabulous playground entirely made with iron parts. You can buy the ticket directly at the station,... More

The train wends its way through thegorges on the way to Mariana. Scenery is nice but the engineering feat that allowedthis railway to be laid is amazing.

Only Fridays to Sundays, Lovely way to return to Ouro Preto from Mariana which is smaller and more charming than Ouro Preto. Mariana is half an hour away (bus stop is north east of tirandente sq., runs twice hourly, single ticket costs R$3) . all sites are well indicated in the streets (no maps required) and the churches charge only...
