Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The landscapes are beautiful, but pedestrians are greatly hampered in a city where any movement depends on steep cobblestone and soapstone slopes. Lots of motorcycles with deafening noise and heavy traffic of cars and buses. The pedestrian sidewalks are laughable and there is a lot of dust everywhere. The same items sold at popular markets are found at a lower price in stores in the historic center.

Top tip: seek the help of a Guide. The city is extremely steep and it becomes impossible (except for an athlete) to walk all the points to be visited. We visited a gardener. The entrance to the churches is paid, and there are few options of craft shops, souvenir shops or local products. Most of the trade in the historic centre is directed towards the locals. A second tip: stay in the historic centre in order to facilitate locomotion. I noticed that the night ends early, few tourists on the streets. The highest concentration is during the day. The town is poorly preserved.

As a world traveler, I have seen many charming ancient towns in Europe, Peru Mexico etc, and I guess I am spoiled. I had heard so many raving statements about this colonial city, that, after a grueling 3 hours drive from Belo Horizonte, I was quite dissapointed when I got to Ouro Preto.
Yes, it is historically interesting as it was the focal point of 18th century Brazilian golden age under Portuguese rule. Tremendous wealth from gold mining poured into Portugal, and the Church as well, which can be seen in the numerous Baroque Revival churches around the city. All this wealth was amassed, of course, with the "help" of slaves brought from Africa by boat loads!
The most interesting thing in the city, apart from 1 or 2 churches, is the Inconfidencia Museum or Rebellion Museum which retraces the history of the city.
Churches are truly the big attraction here, with Brazilian tourists posing and taking selfies in front of the altar 😃.
The Mine Museum which would have been great to visit, is closed indefinitely.
We unfortunately felt that this city is relying solely on its Baroque chuches (which are not so well kept outside) to attract tourists

It was well below my expectations. Whenever I saw photos and footage of Ouro Preto I imagined a more charming and organized place. We went to Tiradentes before and it is many times better. Access to Ouro Preto is very bad, both on the roads and within the city, a lot of movement, no parking, a lot of hustle and bustle. So if you're looking for a quieter city, with a historic center that's easy to get around and charming, Tiradentes is better. If you're looking for more excitement, then yes, Ouro Preto.

Beautiful scenery, sensational churches and not very crowded in September. Prepare for endless slopes that get worse in the sun. But the beautiful images are rewarding. We recommend hiring a gardening tour, so you can enjoy it better and with Guide some carris bao climb some slopes

I confess that I expected much more from Ouro Preto. Obviously it is a beautiful city, but I found the historic center to be very dirty and poorly maintained. Furthermore, the fact that they charge to enter churches I find absurd, but this evil also occurs in other cities in the state. And get ready to go up and down a lot of hills. Act leg!

You don’t come there by chance when you travel to Brazil. But the effort is worth it. Strolling along these very steep cobbled streets is worth it, but this city is so incredible that you quickly forget your legs. Multiple churches to see. Be careful to combine the different opening hours to see as much as possible.
Some museums too.
Multiple breathtaking panoramas all over the city.

Incredible, it is a city that every Brazilian should visit to learn about our history and learn more about our origins and riches. Many churches, the buildings are all very well preserved and there are so many hills!!!!! To go for a walk, your physical fitness must be up to date and wear comfortable clothes/shoes!!!! I've always wanted to get to know the city and I don't regret it at all, quite the opposite, I recommend that everyone come and see it.

Black gold is spectacular! Breathe history and culture! I came here when I was 16 and returned 20 years later with my wife and son to review this amazing place. It is beautiful to see the houses, the churches and the historic architecture of the place. I also strongly recommend visiting the Museum of Confidence, part of the history of Brazil.

It is a two plus hour drive from Belo Horizonte to get to this famous and historical hill town of Ouro Preto. The town has many historical churches. The fun part is to drive around the hilly, cobble stoned, and narrow paths of the town. It was a challenge. You need an SUV at least with good clearance.
I found a local guide, but he only conversed in Portuguese. Somehow, I was able to piece out his explanation of the various sites. You need a guide to experience to town.
There is a famous church with a lot of gold plating. The town center was bustling with activity and you can visit a nobleman's man maintained as it was in the old days.
Try one of the local restaurants in the center. There have good buffets with reasonable prices.
I also visited a non productive Gold Mine. It was a good tour. Not everyone speaks English here. It will be helpful to know a few words in Portuguese or use a language app.
As part of the tour, you can also visit the pretty town of Mariana. The drive itself is fun.
