amazing beach, great for an overnight camp. easy 2 hour hike to get there, only a dozen people on the beach the day we were there and its over 1km long so loads of room. lovely sheltered bay. a must for a trip to ilha grande

Good beach to relax! Not so many people go there because have a 3 hours hiking (from Abraao). There is only one restaurant to lunch and no places to sleep (you must back to Abraao by walking).

The village of Dois Rios is a tough 8 km hike across Ilha Grande. Near the halfway point summit on the road there is a trail (Trilha 14) that leads sharply downhill through bamboo groves and steep jungle forest. This trail reemerges on the road and cuts off the two long switchbacks. In Dois Rios the beach is a long curve of pure sand, clear calm ocean, and very few people. You may be able to buy mineral water, beer and a sandwich to enjoy your beach day. After lunch you should explore the small museum facing the dynamited ruins of the presidio, where political and criminal prisoners were incarcerated at various times between 1930 and 1994. After the last prisoners were transferred to Rio, the place was blown up and left as rubble. The townsite has that eerie quality in concert with abandonment despite the recent addition of a university research facility. There is a restaurant there serving comida caseiro. And you should sign in and out with the guard at the gate who will tell you with a knowing grin that there is no bus or taxi service here, so hit the road with enough water for the long hike back to Abraão. Watch for monkeys. There was a troop of browsing primates - black Howlers that are much bigger than capuchins - near the lower intersection of Trilha14 and the road. Get back to Abraão before sunset.

We did the trail to Dois Rios from Abraao, and it wasn't that easy, but it is do-able in 1h45min (one way) - it was worth it! The little village is quite and cute. The old prison is defo worth a visit (free), they also have some small works of art made out of recycled material - being sold for almost nothing!
When we got to the beach, it was like a dream - definitely the most beautiful beach we ever been to.
Don't forget to take some food with you, there is only one place selling stuff, and I can't remember if they have a kitchen.
Just as you leave the village (about 15 min away), there is the Soldiers' pool - which is a set of mini-waterfalls. We stopped for a dip and it was fantastic.
We tried to take what we thought it was a shortcut - but we ended up climbing a very steep hill, using our hands - we suspect that wasn't the real short cut. So, I suggest you're absolutely sure about where the shortcuts are, otherwise just stick to the main trail.

I would never have heard of this beach had I not met a friendly brazilian couple who asked if I would like to join them on a hike across the island(Ilha Grande) to see an old abandoned prison. The hike is pretty easy but wear good shoes(if you wear havainas like the cariocas, you will get blisters) and it takes aprox 3 hours each way(unless you stop at this really awesome swimming hole!) The village of Dois Rios seems almost deserted and depressing. It was a police/prison town up till the 70's and the ruins of the prison are free to walk thru but may give you the chills. Then!!! after you leave the prison you are faced with the exquisite Dois Rios beach(the irony of the dark, sad prison adjacent to a magnificent beach is apparent to all who visit! I counted maybe 5 other people on this secluded beach with its fine, white sand and warmish turqoise waters(not alot of heavy surf, nice!) there is also a fine lagoon at the prison end of the beach (actually a river outlet) There are no services and no food so bring lunch!!!and water!! It really is isolated. The hike back was a bit drudgerous with the afternoon bugs(bring deet!!) and of course the daily thunderstorms( tis' a rainforest) We were very happy to get back to vila abraao(by6pm when it gets dark dont forget) All in all I can say it was quite the hike but more than worth it to see an isolated, nearly deserted (especially after Rios crowds)and paradasaic beach. I am going back next year!!! nate

This is a place you must visit if you are in the island.
The access is by hiking 2,30hrs on a wide road of soil and rocks, from Vila do Abraão.
If you are lucky and the ocean is calm you may find a boat to take you back to Abraão, otherwise you will have to hike back.
But its worth every step. The left side of the beach has a cristal clear water river that ends in the white sands of the shore.
You also have the prison ruins and a museum that is good to visit
Go early and enjoy!

Definetly a must see in the island. Don't let the walking distance change your mind. The village itself seems abandoned but the beach is wonderful, specialy on both ends of it. Hiring a mountain bike is a good choice to reach Dois Rios more quickly but get prepared for a 4km ramp up.

I have done this hike multiple times, 9 km each way, uphill/downhill. Trail is well maintained because the only 2 cars allowed on the island the (police car and university research truck) travel this trail daily ensuring an easy path for hikers. On the trail you could hear and sometimes see monkeys (Bugio), as well as gorgeous butterflies...
At the beach there was a gentleman selling homemade sandwiches, pizza and acai bowls, delicious! The beach has two rivers and is very relaxing. very worth the hike, done it 4 times and would do it again!

As you have already read, it is roughly 8.3 km one way from town to this beach. It took myself and 3 others just over two hours (all in our 20s and relatively fit). It was not terribly exhausting but the heat and humidity require a lot of water. Upon arriving to the beach we basically had it to ourselves. The only people that came were a few other hikers and people on private tours. We could leave our stuff in a spot under the shade and go into the water without having to worry. The reason I gave this place this four stars is because the water was not the nicest. That is putting it nicely. It was very murky, gritty and had a brownish tint to it. Mendes has a much nicer color but to be honest if this beach had the same color, it would be the better beach. Be prepared to hike back if you don't want to fork over at least 50 bucks for a boat to Mendes!

Lopes mendes can offer white sand, blue water and many miles for you to be alone..Dois rios it's different, you can't get there by boat, you can't get back from there by boat.. So, either you walk (2 hours) there and back (other 2 hours) or you ride a bike (ride / walk)...Let me tell you that the trail it's long, but more simple that the one to lopes.. but once you're there, it's amazing... A breathtaking beach, the rivers, the abandoned village, everything is like taken from a movie... For me it's a must go.

hola yo voajo con mi novia vamos a pasar por ilha grande un par de dias, para saber, cuando cuesta un alquiler de bicis en vila do Abraão y cuando se tarda en llegae hasta dois rios, y si hay algún lugar para comer ahi, muchas gracias
