The fort is located on the top of a mountain, with breathtaking views of Rio skyline, Guanabara Bay and Niterói. One can chose to either walk up there (which can be extremely pleasant, because you'll be in the middle of the forest) or to go by car. First, you will reach Forte São Luis, which is known as "Brazilian Machu... More

We reached the Complex easily by car, just following the signs. There is a bus stop on the corner. We arrived there around 9:40 and took the tour at 10:00 h, very well led by a kind soldier. The Forte São Luis is located in an active military unit. This Unit – the 21º Field Artillery Group - is the... More

Nice ride, perfect for going with shool-age children. Site with a marveous view to the neighboorhoods of Jurujuba and São Franciso, with many restaurants nearby.

Imagine a fortress that is in the top of a mountain, giving you a panorama view of Rio de Janeiro (Sugar Loaf and Christ the Redemer included), Niterói and the Atlantic Ocean. Now put a lot of history and interisting architecture together. It´s just breathtaking. The bad part is... It´s only open on weekends and national holidays.

The fort was build in 1610 when Niteroi was one of the largest and most important cities of Brazil (Rio was nothing). The view from here is great and you can take a guided tour of the fort. Make sure to bring an ID card or Passport along since this is a military installation. My personal recommendation is to make... More

This is one of several Military forts on either side of Guanabara Bay in Rio/Niteroi. It is a fascinating visit to take in all these forts. Sao Luiz, is just a gate and shell basically but the further up the mountain the better it gets. Antiquated artillery gun emplacements await you at the top! The sites on this tour are... More
