I challenge you to go all the way to the top, you won't regret!

Amazing view from the top! Hike is steep, meaning you'll need a tennis/hiking boots and of course, take water with you! Early morning or later in the afternoon are best because it gets really hot up there. However, Brazil weather is humid and it can be slippery if you go too early or after a rain. There is a rope to help you pull yourself at the hardest part of the hill. The reward, other than the amazing view is to give a tchbum (jump in the water) in the crispy water below/besides the rock when you get back down, have a caipirinha (Brazilian drink) & snacks at the trailer. This is my favorite beach in Brazil!

Breathtaking!

One of the best views of Itacoatiara Beach. You may climb it through a light level track right from the beach sand. There are regular buses from Niteroi downtown, and it takes fourty minutes average.

Nice hike!

I really like this spot in Niteroi. It's a pretty intense little hike, i've done it maybe five times and every time i get tired half way. The thing is, to me it's easier to get past the steep first part of the rock if i run up, so that always beats me down half way. The first bit is a trail in the woods just going up, starting with some steps then just trailing up. When you come to a plateau there are two different trails to go, one going down and the other going up ( to Costão). Thesis the part where you start to actually up the rock and it starts pretty steep which is i why i have to lunge my way up this part. Don't forget to stop and look back because you can see the Pedra do Elefante and Alto Mourão which is a beautiful view!! At the top there is no shade and sun insurer is unforgiving so it's best to go in the morning or late afternoon. Just be aware that coming back down in the dark is risky.

Totally unbelievable hike and views!

Love the hike and the experience of looking at Itacoatiara beach from above! It is a hike that requires strength, good lungs and courage, as at times you have only the rock and your body to hang on to...Totally worth it! Going with friend is a fun adventure and by oneself is quite meditative. Prepare legs and your senses to get blown away...=)

Outstanding view, exhilarating experience
Feb 2016
Trail starts with a fairly straightforward hike through the trees, which soon forks into two branches, one of which is the Costão. From there on, the trail is just stone, which means it can get very hot as the day goes on - best to do the hike early. The beginning of the trail is a steep climb in which I had to use my hands. Thankfully, that section was short. From there on, the trail gets a lot easier. When you get to the top you're treated with an amazing view of the sea and itacoatiara beach.
