Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Founded in 1722 by freed African slaves, it is the oldest church in the city. It was built by, and for, all those considered not white enough to attend the church of the ruling elite. These would included the illegitimate offspring of the aristocracy, their children, indigenous people, and freed slaves.
It was not open on the day (Monday) that we visited during a walking tour with our private guide, but that was no loss since he told us that is was deconsecrated in the 20th century, has a plain interior, and that it now serves as a sparse museum.

It always irritates me when churches charge an entrance fee, even though this one is only BR4.00. Since it's no longer a functioning chapel, but a one room museum, I suppose the fee is fair enough, but since they won't allow photography, I decided not to go in. You can actually see the entire museum from the door. For free.

Worth a look when walking around Paraty. Lovely little church with nice views around it. Still in use today.

This church is part of Brazil´s history. It is centenary and it was made by slaves. Also, part of Paraty landscape. Every famous picture you see from Paraty includes this church and the bay. Religion there is nothing to be with the fact that this church is art and part of a country´s history. Enjoy!

The best view from the church is the setting in the landscaping one has when approaching it from the Sea. It is a must see view in Paraty. All the photos from Paraty have the church, the mounatins in the background and the bay.

We are not fans of churches just because every place tourists go has them. But this one is small and pretty. Worth a stop.

The Church & Museum was not open on our late afternoon guided tour of Old Town Paraty... it is significant structure.....while not an elaborate exterior it is has a similar exterior architecture to Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, the rich peoples church....our guide explained it was built by the mixed blood and rejected peoples of Paraty....so their sacrifice is the greater of the two, which is appealing to me.

I don't know why, but this church is my favorite church in paraty. maybe because of the musicians playing music sometime in the gras just in front of the church or because it is Newley renovated...

Very nice and new church, very well maintained, with free access. Unfortunately you cannot take photos even without flash for no technical reason.

I visited this church and found it wonderful in every respect. Unfortunately, I couldn't take pictures. But it's worth knowing.
