Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

While on a morning walking tour of the historic center of Paraty, our private guide pointed out this church to my spouse and me. Located facing the sea, it was built in 1800, and has a very simple facade. Unfortunately, it was closed on the day of the week (Monday) that we visited.

Our guide, told us that the colonial aristocracy also attended this church in addition to the larger Santa Rita Church.

Escaping the hot dusty streets of the Centro Historico of Parati, you gravitate to the seafront. On the corner you can sit on the grass in the shade of a mature palm and enjoy the elegant composition that is the Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores - Our Lady of Sorrows, one of Mary's many epithets - a beautifully proportioned chapel with its own cemetery behind. There was no indication of when one might see inside it, though clearly it can be done, as the Trip Advisor photos show. To admire its architecture from such a refreshing vantage point is already a pleasure.

If you find yourself in Paraty be sure to walk around to this small but beautiful church on the edge of the old town. It fits in perfectly with the post-colonial character of the town and its slightly faded charm.

I've no idea how you get to see this church as it's never open. Not even on Sundays. Pity as from the outside, it looks quite impressive.

What are Brazilian authorities wanting for? They should recover that historical monument in order to preserve the history of this lovely place.

A very pretty church, simple in design but as its built at the edge of the town you can get far enough back for it to really appreciate it. Also as its on the corner of the blocked system and closest to the beach and river mouth it is furthest from the crowds . A perfect place to sit in the quiet and reflect on the beauty of the town

This church was on our guided tour of Old Town Paraty on a Monday. It was not open during our tour The guide explained that it was built in the year 1800 by women from the aristocracy of Paraty.

In 1901 it was almost completely renovated. The brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows was created in the same year and only permitted the admission of women.

A Paraty web site states that the church only opens on Saturdays from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and has no visitation fee. It is not allowed to enter with bathing suits, to film and to photograph.

There was a celebration going on while we were there so we got to watch locals do a processional out of the church into the streets. We went into the church afterwards and was surprised by it's color and feel. Worth a walk through.

Beautiful small Church in the heart of Paraty - not huge or particularly ornate but worth a visit, particularly as Paraty only has a few places to visit (as opposed to the shops, cafes, bars and restaurants)
