These past sunny and warm days have been perfect for boat, stand-up paddle and kayak tours in the Paraty bay. What a gorgeous scenery with all nuances of blue from the open summer sky contrasting with all shades of greens from the waters and tropical forests...all these framed by this endless chain of mountains all around the bay. Such unique landscape to contemplate and enjoy the many outdoor activities.

One of the most beautiful places in the world. We took the trip with the schooner *Desejo*, owned by the excellent João Ramos (24 99952-2735). The boat fits up to 26 people, but it was a great price for the 6 of us and it was spectacular. Captain João shows us the best spots to visit, according to our wishes. The boat is beautiful, comfortable and great for taking photos, as well as having everything available, including drinks, snorkels and boards.

We wondered up and down the quay and spotted the "Barco Joao Neto" a really attractive small boat with captain Gustavo who treated us really well and spoke English. It's suitable for 4+ people. We agreed a price of R$200 for 3 passengers and a 4-5 hour trip + drinks. Our day was glorious. The various bays we stopped in provided excellent snorkeling and one had a popular restaurant where we had lunch. We felt R$200 was excellent value. so much so that we booked another day for us to explore alternative bays. Gusto did a great job and took us to a lovely bay where we spotted numerous turtles. I cannot recommend a day with gusto on Joa Neto more highly.

I do this Private boat tours every time I come to Paraty. I prefer to deal directly to the captain of the boats because you can bargain especially in low season, and it's even cheaper than the schooners, which are packed of people and loud music. These little boats are anchored along the river and the owners are always around waiting for tourists. So search for them and bargain the trip!
Even if you are only 2 people they can do this tour for you and you choose how long you want the tour to last. I do usually 1hour.
Speedboats are triple price so if you don't have a destination and just want to hang out in the sea and don't want to spend the whole afternoon in a boat, that's perfect. Sometimes I take some food and even do a picnic. They prepare the top of the boat with cushions so it looks like a lounge in the sea!
Today I went in the boat Aline II, and the captain was João, who was very nice and of course, Gave me a good low season discount! Ah, and take cash as they are small boats, they usually accept only cash (reais)

We swam in the warmest water ever with very few people around, we visited beautiful bays, saw nature at its best, the local fauna and exotic fishes and birds. We had a delicious lunch on an island beach. We had the chance of having a very knowledgeable boatman and guide to ourselves for the day and would recommend sailing on Barco Latitude with Andre.

The beaches in Paraty offer you a huge advantage. The feeling that you own idyllic isolated beaches for an entire afternoon, or who knows a day. The most relevant tips are that you must pick the right season - which is from Nov to early Dec, and during the weekdays. The usual daily tours offered by agencies are not costly, but if you can afford to pay approx USD60 per person, you can upgrade your experience at the beaches significantly. If you are one of those looking for something more personalised, go for the sailors who offer daily tour services for small groups (approx up to ten). They are waiting for you at the docks at the mainland Historic Center ("cais" in Portuguese), in line, and as you approach them they will suggest you day-tours or hour-tours. Their initial negotiation price is USD 25 per hour, but if you define the route, stops and the approximate quantity of hours, you may get a daily pack price of approx USD 60 per person. It is the price I obtained for a full day sailing with a small number of stops, for two persons. This is also a much better option if you prefer to enjoy more of the beach time or the snorkelling time instead of sailing time. Two beaches not to be missed are PRAIA DA LULA (means squid's beach, approx one hour from the mainland docks) and SACO DA VELHA (approx 1,5 hours from the mainland docks) beaches. They are small and extraordinarily beautiful and clean with warm, calm and crystal emerald green water. Perfect for a couple or a family with small children. Suggestions for snorkelling points are LAGOA AZUL and ILHA DO ALGODAO (approx 1,5 hours from the mainland docks, and only ten minutes from the SACO DA VELHA beach). One suggestion is to leave the docks at approx 10:30 o'clock, head straight to the ILHA DO ALGODAO for an amazing, lazy lunch at the RESTAURANTE DO HILTINHO, and spend the afternoon at the SACO DA VELHA. More often than not, you will find yourself completely alone there, it is a feeling of exclusivity that you can not get if you are there at the busy season. Be prepared to be spoiled. If you were happy with the services of the sailor, I advise you to pick the same sailor/ boat for all your following trips. Unfortunately, most of them do not speak English. It is a long wait until you get to the beach, but it is a certainty that you will be rewarded with a stunning view. Make sure you take this extra money for the boat trips and don't miss the best things in the surroundings! All price references as of Dec/2012.

We recently returned home for a magical visit to Brazil. We had amazing meals and amazing adventures...one right after another! Though we loved Brazil and our trip in its entirety, one of the absolute stand-out best days was spent was on a private boat we hired for the day to cruise around Paraty Bay.
We hired the “Cleopatra”, a beautiful pink boat with a charismatic guide/captain named Marco Aurelio. The boat was so cute, it had an "upstairs" area with pillows and shade. He knew Bay, the islands, the restaurants and the best snorkeling stops like the back of his hand, and he made a fantastic caipirinha! He took us to Catimbau Island, a small island with a small restaurant set between two large boulders. He spoke English, Spanish, and of course, Portuguese. He was great in helping us order some of the best dishes and also got us a cup of fish food at the restaurant to feed the fishes right next to our table.
He next took us a larger, gorgeous island behind Catimbau, it had a restaurant in the cliff face and they made the best moqueca we had all trip (and we tried it a lot!) He explained to us a bit about Paraty’s history, the protected land and gave us some tips about where to eat in town that night.
The whole day was perfect and a fantastic way to see the gorgeous bay. The more “public” schooner tours passed us a few times, it was lively and packed but also appeared much inferior to the way we got to experience and enjoy the Bay.

What to do in Paraty? If the weather is nice definitely go on a schooner trip on one of the first days of your stay in Paraty, as then you can decide later, whether you want to take another schooner trip later, go for a private boat tour, take a bus to some beaches nearby or sth else. These trips cost about 30-40 reais/person, plus they serve some fruit (for free), drinks and lunch during a usually 5 hour trip, which includes 4-5 stops by the beaches for snorkelling or laying in the waves. Snorkelling gear can be rented for 10 reais.
If you decide to go for a private boat trip we can recommend Marco Aurelio with his pink boat called Cleopatra. He speaks sufficient English and brings you to places, where the bigger schooners usually don't go to. A five hour trip cost for us 200 reais, snorkelling gear included:)
The best beaches we went to were in Trinidade, which are definitely worth a bus trip, as you can see more waves there and the furthest beach in Trinidade, which is accessible only on foot, is a really nice place to lie in the sun and relax. P.S. despite accessibility issues there is a bar on the beach.

An excellent option for a private Bay tour. Andre speaks English fluently, has a nice, clean, reliable boat and runs a wonderful tour. Highly recommended.
His email if needed is barcolatitude@hotmail.com.
He picks the islands to visit, but is open to your choices if they are reasonable. If you go, be sure to eat at Eh-Laho, a restaurant on a tiny island in the bay. You'll not be disappointed.

Infelizmente não, pq o passeio foi organizado na pousada que estava, então o valor em si era mais em conta tbm. Dizem por lá que a melhor empresa é a Neturno.

Where do you pick up these local boats for snorkelling and how much does the 5 hour tour cost?
Written 27 January 2018
Hi there! It is not a snorkeling boat. If you brought your own equipment you likely could snorkel though. These boats are right at the marina. You will see them when you walk down to the water. We stayed at a Pousada and were very close to the boats.

How do you go about arranging a private boat trip with snorkelling. We have a day stop off a small cruise ship.

Aloha!
Usually in hotels there are several phones of local guides that do this type of tour. At the hotel we stayed there was a guide who took us on a tour. However, as you come from a ship, it is best to inquire about this tour on the ship.
Aloha!
