Neighbourhood: Centro
Downtown Rio is the place where this city was born. With modern skyscrapers sharing space with historical buildings and landmarks, this neighbourhood is living proof that the old and the new can live together harmoniously. As you would expect, downtown is where all major companies house their offices. However, the region isn’t restricted to businesses. Gems such like the “Paço Imperial,” which is a cultural centre that used to serve as a residence for governors of Brazil, can be found here. Pedra do Sal, a Monday night street party, is also in this neighbourhood. This landmark is the birthplace of samba and is famous for its “roda de sambas” (“dance circles”). Stop in for one and get closer to discovering where Brazilian happiness comes from.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Terrible reception for visitors, I arrived at 10:00 (shortly after opening), then they informed me that it would have to start at 2:00 (and entrances close at 4:00). I went back and they said to return at 3:00 pm; When I did, they said it would be 20 minutes late. Then it was too much and I gave up, even more so due to the lack of cordiality from most of the reception staff. Good thing the beautiful Navy Museum is right behind the Palace, it made my trip worth it. As for Palácio Tiradentes, there is zero desire to return.

I was disappointed with the Guide of the place, we arrived at 11:10 and we waited until 11:30 for the start of the guided tour. The Guide finished with the previous group and went with them to the bathroom. At 11:40 she sat at the computer of the reception and asked to wait another 10 minutes, because she was tired of having made a previous visit. If you're so young you're already so tired, imagine when you're middle-aged!
In the face of bad will, we prefer to leave.

Nice and monumental building next to the Paco Imperial - the former seat of the Brazilian parliament. You can take a free tour inside, but unfortunately the informative tables (about the political history in Brazil) are only in Portuguese. So do not worry and ask guides, which speaks English, to explain the history of this place... During working days, you can watch legislative sessions.

It is ironic that the building that was once the jail, now houses the legislative chamber of the government for Rio. On entry the guides seemed far more interested in accessing their mobile phones than they were for helping us. Sent us off on a really boring tour of the corridors on the first floor which were lined with posters - depicting the political history of Rio - in words & only in Portuguese. We came back very disappointed and told this to one of those mobile phone possessed guides. The guilt was obvious on his face and for the following hour he showed us a whole different side of the palace including an excellent explanation of the main chamber. Ask for more when you arrive

The visit only takes fifteen minutes, and you'll learn about the Brazilian parliament and politics. The building housed the national parliament until it moved to Brazilia; it's now used by the RJ state parliament. Most explanations are in Portuguese only. Free visit.

This impressive building was constructed between 1922 and 1926 on the site of the old Imperial Parliament building which was demolished in 1922. The current building, Tiradentes Palace, was from 1926 until 1960, when Rio de Janeiro was the capital of Brazil, the sight of the Brazilian National Congress.
When the capital was moved from Rio to Brasilia in 1960, the Tiradentes Palace, became, and still is, the site of the Legislative Assembly for the State of Rio de Janeiro.
When we visited there was a small, but very noisy, demonstration going on and we were met outside the doors of the building by a chap who asked if we wanted to have a guided tour. Absolutely!
As this is still a working building the tour was rather restricted but we still got to see the main entrance, some of the main historical rooms on the first floor as well as enter the visitor's gallery of the chamber of the Legislative Assembly and see the delegates seating arrangements, the beautiful painted dome, the stained glass ceiling representing the night sky on 15 November 1989 and the decorative panel representing the signing of the First Republican Constitution of 1891. Our guide was very pleasant, spoke excellent English and was very informative.
Well worth a visit.

Shown around by a delightful young lady, who mixed information about the building with facts about the local area. If you are interested in government, architecture or Rio's history, this is a very enjoyable place to spend an hour.

We only passed this building as we made our way on a walking tour but it was the most impressive one of the day. It is of classic design and in superb condition.

In this palace it's all about justice. A guide tells you everything about the palace: you can have a guided tour in Portuguese, but also in English and it's for free! Nice how to see how the parliament in Rio looks like

A gorgeous building from the outside and when we went in to see what it was, as we has assumed it was a museum we were greeted by friendly staff. We were immediately offered a guided tour (the staff spoke multiple languages) and told us about the history of Palacio Tiradebtes. I would definitely recommend this if walking around Centro :-)
