Top ways to experience Centro Cultural Municipal Parque das Ruínas
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.

Very weak. I do not recommend. The so-called "park" has nothing to offer, except the view, which you can also have from other areas, and the good setting for forums in the "ruins", which are, in reality, a small old construction, with exposed brick walls, where they installed stairs for access to the interior of the building. The park is extremely small, you climb a staircase on one side, turn around and leave the other, in less than 10 minutes, if you stop to observe details. Access to the site is very poor, steep streets, no parking, nor accessibility for wheelchairs and people with low mobility. There is also no infrastructure for food, just a small snack bar that didn't work the day I went. I am a Carioca and this was the tourist spot that most disappointed me in Rio. However, with good management, it could improve considerably.

We enjoyed walking around the ruins. The views are beautiful. There were some exhibits in all the floors that we enjoyed. We went to various floors and took some pics of the city and the water. Come early to avoid crowds.

After learning the history of this place I thought it so apt that it is now used as a cultural centre. It must have been beautiful in its heyday. Would love to visit when there is something on. The views from the top of the house are spectacular with a different twist on Rio than some of the other sights.

Free to enter and ramble around. Worth a look if you are in this neighbourhood.

The Parque das Ruinas is a rather manicured ruin of a villa once inhabited by a Rio de Janeiro socialite in Santa Teresa - once posh, now bohemian. It offers great views over the old city. There is also a small gallery and somebody organised Yoga lessons on the site. Right next door is the Museu da Chacara do Ceu, housed in a somewhat more modern villa set in nice gardens. Also worth a visit!

The view from the top of the house is amazing and the free tram ride is quite nice. My hotel said that this area should be ok during daytime. Well.. But I would strongly think twice before to go there; especially alone without the group. A few blocks from the house all of a sudden I was attacked by a criminal with a knife at 2.30 pm. He pushed me on the street, put the knife near my throught and robbed my bag. There was another tourist (a lady from Norway) with me and a group of tourists (a family from Argentina) nearby so I was not the only person on that street. I think the area does not look dangerous but I strongly advise all of you to avoid this neighbourhood. According to the police that is very bad neighbourhood and there are several favelas nearby. I lost my bag and camera but I think was very lucky because the criminal didn't hit me with the knife. Still life and kicking

I went on a Saturday and didn't really expect much. When I arrived, there was an orchestra playing, which was great, and other than that it was the opening day of an art exhibit, so we were treated to free champagne! It was a great time all around and I strongly suggest that you check their scheduled events before going, I was lucky to go on a day with a lot of things happening at the same time - all for free.

The old house felt like a living storybook, the interior designs are a great mix of old tasteful bricks & glasshouse & greens, love it!

You cant miss it if you are at Santa Teresa!

Ok, it is a couple of years ago. I was working in Rio and a friend suggested going to the Parque das Ruinas. He explained it was the ruins of a stately home and they had jazz evenings there on Thursday evenings. I am not a jazz fan, but I was assured it was an interesting place to visit and we could buy drinks there. So we went.

When we arrived, there was a lot of Cariocas (Rio residents) going, too. We climbed the path up to the ruins - cunningly lit. The band was cooking away. We got drinks and settled in. The views across Guanabara Bay were amazing, the night air was not as clammy as the day-time, the choppe (beer) was cold and the band were warming up. We had a sandwich, admired the pretty girls (compulsory in Brazil), had another beer, and the band were starting to work. We walked around the place, imagining what the house would have been like when it was a home, chatted with the policeman on duty, had another beer, noticed some girls we had not seen before, had another beer, and the band were really going for it. It was a really good evening's entertainment in an unbelievable venue.

I enjoyed it so much, I went again when my wife came over for a stay. This time, the weather was not so nice. It rained - but the awning kept the entertainment area dry - and the lightning over the mountains in the distance were a great light show.

The bands I saw were local boys but, man, they were good. I did not know I could enjoy an evening's jazz so much. Both times.

The remains of the house are something out of a suspense movie and geckos crawl above your head catching moths attracted by the lights. The police presence ensured safety.

You can get there on the Santa Teresa tram, though you might need a map to get from the stop to the Parque das Ruinas. Find a taxi to get home afterwards.

You can only reach this place by foot, taxi or if you live on the street (no Uber's allowed). It provides a lovely view of downtown and the bay. There is a theater, an outdoor stage that often has performances on the weekend as well as an art gallery and small restaurant. It is a good place to stop if exploring the neighborhood.

we walked from a tram stop in Santa teresa which took around 25 mins, on the way back down the bank the tram took us up, I stopped and got my hair cut by a young lad in his garage, ( sounds dodgy) and probably looked it a little but I thought id give this guy a go because why not. he aint gonna rob me of my hair and he seemed pretty legit. It was the best hair cut I've ever had it actually looks sick. and cost 10 reals which is around £2. the museum had some beautiful pieces of art which were very old and blatantly worth a lot of money saying there was armed guards. for sure worth a visit and also the walk to.
