Neighbourhood: Santa Teresa
Santa Teresa is a bohemian enclave hosting many local artists’ studios. The narrow, winding streets of this neighbourhood were revitalised years ago, and visitors can now stroll through this area to view magnificent mansions dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. A highlight not miss: Museu Chacará do Céu, a former mansion turned museum which houses works by prominent Brazilian modern artists.

It was our first visit to the museum and we were delighted. Beautiful views of the city, a welcoming garden and a surprising collection. Great Brazilian artists, Portinari, Di Cavalcanti, Iberê Camargo, to name a few, and great names in European art such as Matisse, Miró, Degas, among others. But, for me, the most exciting thing was finding a beautiful painting by Berthe Morisot.
In addition to the permanent collection, we also really liked the exhibition by the Chinese artist, Mzyellow. All in all, an unmissable visit.

This relatively small art museum has extremely good paintings by Claude Monet("Marinha"), Troyon, Courbet, Bellange, Frans Post, Emil Bauch, Nicolas Taunay, and Salvador Dali. It also has fine Brazilian paintings by Candido Portinari, Emilio di Cavalcanti, and Albert Guignard. Recently, I also saw a fine Contemporary Art presentation called, "Concert of Chimpanzees" by Nelson Leirner at this compact museum. From the grounds of this pleasant museum, there are great views of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Downtown Rio. So enjoy.

Loved this little sanctuary on one of the hillsides of Santa Teresa. The museum building is almost swallowed up by the abundant vegetation that surrounds it. Inside one encounters the captivating smell of the wood cabinets combined with the effloresence outside, the balmy breeze from the garden which gives a pleasant sensorical tinge to this museum experience. Entrance to museum is but 2 reais. Visiting the collection could be done in under an hour, but it is lovely to spend a couple of hours simply to enjoy the languid atmosphere and beautiful views in the garden around the museum.

When we visited this attraction we went in search of a Museum and what we found was the residence of Mr. Castro Maya turned into a museum in a beautiful park next to the great ruins of the house at the"Parque das Ruínas" that belonged to Laurinda Santos Lobo, patron of the arts around 1920. The museum was not friendly to be visited because of the extension works that were being carried out. The ruins of the "Murtinho Nobre" House was extraordinary. A magical place with beautiful views of Rio de Janeiro. An opportunity also to visit Santa Teresa. Highly recommended!

This bankers home on top of one of the many hills of Rio de Janeiro was designed in the fifties by Wladimir Alves de Souza.
The yellow stone covering the facades and the refinement of the materials and the exquisite finishings inside, remember the once so popular art deco style. The gardens were designed by Roberto Burle Marx and offer a fascinating view on downtown Rio. By the way: 'Chácara do Céu' stands for 'Heavenly Estate' and that's exactly how I felt when strolling around the interior, as well as enjoying the exterior.
The collection is very rich with European names such as Degas, Matisse, Modigliani, Seurat or Miró. But I'm quite sure Brazilian artists like Di Cavalcanti, Portinari or Iberê Camargo will impress too. And there's of course french Jean-Baptiste Debret, depicting the horrible life of the black slaves between 1816 and 1831.
Not to be missed!

We were disappointed with this museum. There was very little to give us a feel for the original layout of the house or furnishings. Unfortunately the modern art collection was not to our taste and the displays did nothing to help. And after the long walk up to the house we did expect a magnificent view of the city. Not to be due to the many trees obscuring the view. If you are in the area include it in your trip but do not make a special effort to go

The art collection is interesting, but the views from the museum and the park of ruins next door are even more breathtaking.

A beatiful and secure place to relax, walk, read or simply enjoy the view of the city. Great idea: romantic pick nick. Bad: access. The TAXI could not find the place.

Cute little modern art museum in a mid-century modern house featuring Brazilian artists. Also has a nice garden with views of the city.
