Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Flamengo Park or Aterro do Flamengo are some of the popular names given for the Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes Park. The park , as I always say to foreign friends, is definately the equivalent of New York´s legendary Central Park, and indeed has it similarities.
For of all, it was man made, being constructed in an area where it used to be a the ocean. It was inaugurated in 1965 and has 1 200 000 square meter...impressively large, running from Rio de Janeiro domestic airport, Santos Dumont, all the way to Botafogo Beach.
The area is a full park as we know it. it has many basketball courts ( I think 8 or 10 ), 2 specif tennis courts, a skating area, for free style & radical skating, 20 football ( or in America soccer ) fields, 8 volleyball concrete courts, and an air modeling facility. It also has a nice track for marathon and general runners, which invite visitors from all over Brazil.
But what makes it very pleasant it the number of trees and its impressive variety. This part of the park was designed by the legendary Brazilian botanist Burle Marx, who surely made it with an care. To some, considered his most important piece of art.
In nornal days , we can see mostly sportsmen. But on weekends, that where the "Central Park" comes along. We see entire families, golden age people, friends, gathering. We see people from theater, practicing for plays, percussionists, and readers. There is space for everyone since it is so large!!
The best thing is that just on the front, there is the beach, which I generally go to. The water is from the bay, but a recent sewage treatment facility was just inaugurated and keep the beach clean 90 % of the year.
The overall "green" atmosphere brings much peace, and many use the area too for meditation. Today, that park has 8 major hotels in a 2 blocks distance.
Many too use the park for photo shoots, editorials or simply practice their photography hobby. Interesting to mention too the park encompasses itself, within its limits, another major Rio attraction, the Marina.
I truly recommend for eveyone who wishes to have a "true local view of the Carioca relax style".
Finally, the Flamengo Park, or Aterro, has three of my passions, the beach with the worldwide famous Sugar Loaf view, the green and nature so abundant, and the sporting facilities. What could be better in a sunny day in Rio?

It is a nice place to go with your family. You can do different kinds of things there: go skating, in-line skate, go biking, suntan, make a picnic, walk and so on. It is a perfect place to practice sports. The view is amazing !

We were playing rugby one night per week in a field on the attero.
Flamengo is one of Rio's beach. It is not as picturesque as Botafogo or Copacabana. However the attire offers several sports fields and trees that create a different atmosphere, and make it a very interesting place to see or where to live.

Aterro do Flamengo is beautiful but if you go for a bike ride or a walk make sure to be where the crowds are, as it can be quite a dangerous place.

I am sad to write this, as a local, but the place is nice and if you just want to stroll around, there are safer places to go, if you want to have a quick look around, grab a taxi or Uber and ask him to drive through. If you want to go to specific places such the WWII monument or the Museum of Modern Arts, ask your transportation to drive you straight, and wait for you there.

The aterro (a reclaimed area, as the word says) was created by the great brazilian modernist architects of the 1950's. It is very nicely draws, but it fell into a bit of a state of abandonment during the past 30 years of economical crisis. Also known for some robberies after dark.

This is an excellent spot for you to relax, take a walk or run! There's a lot of space with green everywhere... wonderful view of the beach and you can rent a bike and explore the surroundings at ease.
From there you can take a walk down to Botafogo beach with the Sugar Loaf mountain right by your side!

It's the largest park in South America. It's near to Flamengo beach (not recommended for fun thou) but there is a lot funny choices, like the event Parque Criativo at Teatro Paulo Werneck, twice a month, with puppets show for kids and some concerts for grown ups.
Near to Teatro Paulo Werneck you can have fun with your bike, roller and skate. Nice for jogging and picnic as well.

I would like to apologies the New Yorkers. Ok, Central Park is terrific, no doubt about that!!!
But Aterro do Flamengo Park is breathtaking!!!
Are you coming to Rio? So, reserve, at least, a day, a sunny one, to take a run or walk or rent a bike and cycling around.
The Park is a state of the art on gardening, from Master Burle Max.
The bike way is large and well maintained. From end-to-end, from Botafogo Beach to the other corner, the Naval School(crossing the Santos Dumont airport), something about 4Km long. There are many kiosks where you'll refresh yourself with a cold coconut water!
All the way on one side the Gauanabara Bay. Look up and you'll sees the Corcovado! To the other side the Sugar Loaf.
I have no doubt you'll love it!!!

Don't waste your time stoping and taking a look, unless you want to take a still picture of the Sugar Loaf. The park is sun lighted everywhere and the trees don't help much with the heat. On your way to the Santos Dumont Airport, enjoy the trip, and that's it!

Written 6 November 2020
Boa tarde. As bikes alugadas no aterro do Flamengo, por ambulantes, tem cadeirinha pra criança pequena?
Written 19 July 2020
Existe serviço de aluguel de bike no aterro? Não me refiro as bikes do Itaú.
Written 31 October 2019

E existem banheiros no Aterro?

Qual é o preço do estacionamento?
Written 25 September 2018
