Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A large eighteenth century mansion in colonial style, with a beautiful fountain inside, flanked by sculptures and located between the mountains of the Tijuca Forest. hosts a terrific collection of old itens that includes jewelry, pottery and clothes that reflect the luxurious life of the coffee barons, by the time of colonial Brazil.

In the houses you can see amazing portuguese and spanish tiles dating from the 1800's and sculptures. Outside there's a very big space to explore with huge artistic crafts that you can interact with. There's also a part of the forest in which you're allowed to hike. Make sure you have at least 2 hours to properly explore the place.

The museum is situated in Tijuca Forest, not far from the square at Alta de Boa Vista. It is the sister museum of the Chacara da Ceu museum in Santa Teresa, but the setting and grounds are even more impressive. It is in the classic early 20th century style mixing classic European with jungle setting. Installations by some of the most important Brazilian artists include Helio Oticica can be found in the gardens, the tiles (azulejos) decorating the fountains, benches and walls, and also the interior of the house are wonderful. A must visit for anyone interested in Brazilian gardens, architecture, art and in Rio's intellectual history.

This museum exhibits the mansion of Castro Maya, who was a wealthy resident of Rio in the early 1900's. (He was also responsible for the Chacara do Ceu museum in Santa Teresa.) It's a nice museum in a stunning setting in the Tijuca Forest. Aside from the mansion (which contains a small art collection and artifacts from the era), there are several trails into the forest nearby that pass by several modern art exhibitions. There is also a trail that goes into the National Park, although we didn't explore it.
It's a nice museum if you are in the area. It's particularly nice if you want to explore the Tijuca Forest without taking one of the longer hikes inside the National Park. All of the trails near the museum are short and easy but they still give you a glimpse of the forest. If you are lucky you can see some capuchin monkeys in the trees.
The biggest drawback to the museum is that it isn't easy to get there. I believe there are buses that go to the Alto da Boa Vista, but most likely you'll have to go out of you way to get to the bus stop. Your best bet is to take a cab. My recollection is that the cab drive from Ipanema cost me around R$40-R$50. I recommend it, though, if you will be spending more than a couple days in Rio. Our visit to the Tijuca Forest turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip.

This is certainly a change to the usual attractions of Rio which are Christ the Redeemer or Sugar Loaf mountain. This gorgeous house on the edge of the Floresta da Tijuca shows the history of a man and his family and their quest to make the Floresta da Tijuca the fabulous nature park it is today - It is really worth a visit especially with regards to the sense of harmony and relaxation you immediately start feeling due to the way the property and the nature are integrated in a balanced way.

This is off the beaten path because no ody goes there. We were the only people there and apparently few people visit the museum even though it is in the Tijuca forest and close to a waterfall where many people swim.
The coolest thing of this property is the age of the home and how well kept the property house and it's contents have been maintained. The fireplace is 350 years old and the kitchen and dining room are set up as they were many decades ago. Some of the other artwork and tiles walls are very cool to see as well.

The history of the mansion is really cool, you can imagine the parties in the heyday. But it's very abandoned... gardens full of weeds... main house in need of repairs, and the others aren't even mentioned.
A feather.
