We were blown away by the quality of this tour! Not only was our guide, Gabriel, an expert on food, but as a local, he shared lots of interesting facts and insights about Rio and Brazil generally. The food was endless and incredible -- we sampled fruits, street food, dishes from a local restaurant, drinks, juices, acai, and more. Tom and Gabriel were also more than happy to accommodate any interests in trying a particular food, which was a really nice touch.

If you don't have much time in Rio and want to explore the city, I would honestly recommend this tour even over the classic tourist attractions. We only had a day and a half and chose to spend one day on this tour and the half day on Sugarloaf Mountain, and though Sugarloaf had beautiful views, we were so glad we spent most of our time on this tour because it really gave us the chance to get to know Rio in a way we otherwise wouldn't have. I'm not sure we would have felt safe walking around so much of the city on our own, but we felt 100% safe and comfortable on the tour knowing we were in good hands.

Thanks, Gabriel and Tom, for an amazing tour!

Hi Bailey! Thanks so much for this amazing review! I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the tour with Gabriel - as it's a food tour, we naturally focus on food and drinks, but we also try to give lots more on top: a deeper understanding of the city and it's vibrant culture, how to get the most out of your time here, what are the best things to do after the tour and on following days. I really appreciate that you decided to spend so much of your short time in Rio with us! Thanks again, Tom.

What a fantastic tour and such a fabulous way to not only gain insights into this beautiful city but also to learn about the culture of our Brazilians hosts.
Eat Rio (Tom) shared with our family group of 10, some great information about the foods, their origins, and how the fruits, veg and meats are prepared. His knowledge was excellent and he made to tour suitable for all our dietary requirements, and believe me we had a number of those!
We sampled various fruits in the local market, had a tasty lunch at a lovely family run restaurant, then stopped off for açai, and a few alcoholic beverages.
Nothing was too much trouble for Tom, he catered for all our needs.
If you enjoy eating and trying new foods, I would throughly recommend getting in touch with Eat Rio. It’ll make your trip to Rio de Janeiro all the more memorable.
The only downside was that we had to cut the tour down to 4 hrs due to another appt. If I’m in Rio again I’ll definitely be booking another food tour via Tom.

Hi Shilpa! Ah, thanks so much for this lovely review. I think this was the largest private family tour I have taken in many years. It was so nice to meet you all and I was really happy that we were able to squeeze so much into the shorter tour time. Big thanks also to Priyan for helping organise and coordinate with the group so well. I hope we'll see you all back in Rio again before too long!

When I initially reached out, they were fully booked on New Year’s Eve for the food day tour, but Tom of Eat Rio was generous enough to add another group led by him! It’s a perfect way (and amazing value) to start your visit to Rio and get acclimated to the area with the help of an experienced, welcoming guide.

We had a wonderful time learning about local culture, Brazilian food, history, and walking through streets that felt like actual neighborhoods. All the food was interesting and delicious, and super fun to try new fruits we’d never seen before.

We would have loved to have tried the other tours if we had more time. If you’re looking for a chill non touristy small group experience, I highly recommend Eat Rio!

Hey Grace! You guys were such a great group! I loved this NYE tour we did :) I often hear guests say that they're glad they did the tour at the beginning of their trip - we really do try to help our guests out by directing them to the really great experiences (and steering them away from the tourist traps and rip-offs). Thanks for your review, and for booking with me. I hope we'll see you back in Rio soon! Tom

I cannot recommend Tom and his food tour enough. He introduced us to fresh fruits at the street market and immediately we were immersed with the locals and their food. The tour continued into different neighborhoods and different spots and all along the way Tom provided great information about the areas, buildings and even explained how to travel the city via the safe and clean subway system. This tour felt like a friend was guiding us and not a stranger. We had conversations, laughed, ate and drank for hours and it was truly amazing.

Hey Xavier! Sorry it's taken me so long to respond - somehow I missed your review. Wow, I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the Eat Rio Food Tour experience! I really like to make the whole day feel like a relaxed day out with friends, rather than some stuffy 'tour'. It's all about getting to know the real city (away from all the touristy stuff) and, of course, it's about eating and drinking the best authentic Brazilian food you can find. Thanks again for joining me on the tour!

This tour is worth every penny! We arrived in Rio and were a bit overwhelmed with how big the city is (and all the things we had heard about safety), but doing this food tour was such a turning point for us. We did the day food tour which was about 6 hours long and went through markets, local food stalls and restaurants. Our guide (Marie-Lou) was very knowledgeable and passionate about Rio - which really rubbed off on us. We have subsequently tried other restaurants that they recommended which were delicious!

We have fallen in love with Rio and the food tour had a big part to play in that!!

Oh man! Thanks so much for this amazing review J. This must be one of my favourites ever - we love running these tours and it's a lot of fun, but can also be hard to work to get everything organised and keep everyone happy. But when I read something like this it feels like we're really succeeding in what we're trying to do. "We have fallen in love with Rio and the food tour had a big part to play in that!!" - we couldn't ask for more than this. Thank you! The whole team were over the moon to read this. After a couple hundred reviews, I had tired of leaving TA reviews when so many have already done so and so many just link to a generic travel experience. But this tour deserves extra effort. The total antithesis to packaged tours led by joyless employees, EatRio rides on the enthusiasm of its founder and tour guide, Tom. This is his business and one that he loves and enjoys. Carefully cultivating an experience, Tom truly guides us through exotics fruits, memorable bites, a sit down meal while accented with liquors, coffees and juices. If there is a way to improve this tour, I am not sure how to do it. All in all, we spent essentially the entire day, eating, listening and learning. What an amazing way to experience Rio.

Ahhh, thank you so much! One of the things that my guides and I have in common is that we all LOVE Rio. We also love eating, drinking and showing people around this wonderful city. It's a great job, but it isn't always easy and so the passion and love for the city is a must - I'm delighted that you picked up on that because I know the tour just wouldn't work without it. We aim to give our guests a truly organic, personal experience. Every tour is different as we'll tailor things on the fly, according to our guests. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to write this amazing review. This is one for the mantelpiece! ;)

Such an amazing tour!!! Tom is incredibly knowledgeable, super-organized, and just plain FUN! The food and sites that he has picked out are perfect. It is clear that Tom puts a lot of thought and preparation into the tour. He takes great care to include some very unique experiences and to share his particular wit, charm, and perspective.
At the time of our tour, my wife and I had lived in Rio for almost a year. We learned a lot and reinforced some of the things that we had picked up on our own.
We highly recommend this tour for locals, estrangeiros, or anyone who loves food, drink, and a good time!

Hey Corry! Thanks so much for this amazing review :) It was so fun meeting you all and showing you my favourite foodie experiences here in Rio. It's always a fun challenge to have people on the tour who already know Rio - I'm delighted to hear you enjoyed the experience. It'd be great to take you guys out on the evening bar food tour sometime soon - just drop me a line when you're ready! Thanks again for booking with me! Tom

We have been on many food tours both in Australia and around the world. This was excellent not only because of our fabulous guide Marie-Lou but because of the great number of new and novel food experiences. We were introduced to a number of fruits and vegetables that we had never seen nor tried before. The experience of the food from the North East/Amazon area was so interesting and quite mouth tingling! In fact, we were given food from a number of areas within Brazil many of which were quite new for us. It was well paced and we never felt rushed. Marie-Lou was warm, vivacious and so knowledgeable. We could not recommend this tour more highly. It is a great introduction to Rio and Tom will send you many tips for where to eat and drink throughout the city after the tour. Therefore do this tour early in your stay in Rio to take advantage of their experience.

Wow! It's so nice to be well reviewed by a food tour veteran! It's an impossible task to cover *all* of Brazil in just one tour, but we have fun trying! ;) Thanks for your tip to do the tour early in your stay - we always try to get people signed up on their first full day in Rio so they can benefit for all the tips and info we give as part of the tour! Thanks again! Tom

Thanks to Tom for putting on a great tour! We had a lovely time exploring the city. Many told us Rio was unsafe - but this tour proved the opposite.

Great journey around the city and food.
We learned a ton about Brazilian foods and only understood our subsequent meals better because of the knowledge Tom shared.

Highly recommend. Great way to spend a day!

Awwww, thanks ON-guy! :) It's super-nice to hear you felt safe on the tour and in Rio. As you say, people often arrive in Rio terrified with all the scare-stories, but in over 6 years and more than 6,500 guests, we never had a robbery or any problems at all like that. Rio is a really fun city with so much to enjoy (and eat!) if you know where to look. And it's made even more magical when you have a guide to explain the context and the customs, and take you to the best places that only the locals know :) I hope we'll see you back here again someday soon!
