My visit to Rocinha was quite an eye opener. I have heard of Favelas however never knew they were basically self goverining neighborhoods (electricity, water, schools, banks, restaurants, etc..). My tour guide was very honest and asked us not to take random pictures since the...More

I’ve been to Rio de Janeiro three times and this past August was my second time staying in Rocinha. I stayed at a friend’s house in a section of the favela that is high up on the mountain. I felt very safe walking around alone...More

As we walked down intimate alleys between buildings and shops and under sagging power lines, I wondered about the lives of the people living here and Rocinha and for that matter all the other 750 favelas, especially the children. . Do I regret going? NO!...More

My perceptions of what a favela is were blown away. This is the largest favela in rio with 300,000 people. We did the favelatour.org walking tour with a local and got to see real favela life. Yes it has been pacified (police presence) but is still...More
