Neighbourhood: Sé
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighbourhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.
How to get there
- Anhangabaú • 3 min walk

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Enjoy the view of the city - and the incredible garden - by taking one of the free guided visits. There are 3 available times, 10h30, 14h30 e 16h30, and be sure to arrive early since there are max 10 people. You can see Copan, Municipal Theater and Altino Arantes Building from the roof. The garden is also a must see.

The Matarazzo building is a historic site at Centro. Built by Fransesco Matarrazo, the Italian-Brazilian business tycoon, this site now houses the Mayor of Sao Paulo. The interest lies chiefly in the rooftop garden and an amazing view of central Sao Paulo. There is a free guided tour but there are only 2 tours per day. The first one is at 10.30am and they allow the first 10 visitors only. So if you want to be sure, register your name well before 10 am. Special thanks to our guide who took pains to explain both in Portuguese and English.

The city hall offers guided visits to the rooftop-garden for free! It offers and incredible view of São Paulo, you can see almost everything nearby the Anhangabaú Valley and the main iconic buildings sorrounding the main centre of the city. Tours are free and can be in English, you must report to the help desk 30 minutes earlier to enroll, they start at 10:30, 14:30 and 16:30, only 10 visitors per time.
(I recommend going on the last one, so you can see the sunset from there)
The rooftop has over 400 species of plants, it is an italian style building covered in italian marble, everything about it is explained during the visit.

I rate the build as average as I am not a fan of these architecture style, nevertheless our guide told us a visit to the garden can be scheduled in advance so it is on my list for to-do-things next time I will be in Sao Paulo. That garden on the roof must be very impressing.

This is a historical building in the old downtown of Sao Paulo. It was used to host the city mayor and on the top of the building there is a open to sky garden with rare plants. The space used to be open to the public but for some reason it is now closed. However you can ask and see if they will authorize the visit. The name Matarazzo is very famous specially in Sao Paulo, you will find this name everywhere. Matarazzo is an Italian family that immigrated to Brazil with the wave of Italian immigrants just after the WW2 looking for a better life. The Matarazzo were the most successful family and they became really rich. The family business crashed with the 30's world recession still till today has a name in the BR (SP) community.
This area is very dangerous so be aware of your surroundings and who approaches you, thieves normally work in 2 or 3 of them. Also plan your visit, this area has many points you can visit walking. Please see my reviews. I am Brazilian living outside of Brazil and I write to foreigns. Have a good one!

12/12/23 - We went on the guided tour at 2:30 pm (there is also a 4:30 pm option) free entry. The building is magnificent, the guide tells the entire history of the building up to the present day, monumental Carrara marble columns, there is also a large mural made in micro ceramics and at the top of the building an oasis in the heart of the city, it is literally a forest , with diverse views of the city. We suggest having lunch in the center and then discover this oasis.
