About
Housed in a stunning example of eclectic industrial architecture, the Mercado Municipal de São Paulo — nicknamed the Mercadão — has thousands of food items on offer, literally from soup to nuts. Lush tropical and temperate fruits from every season, choice cuts of meats and fish, and hearty prepared foods, such as the renowned and enormous mortadella (bologna) sandwich, complete the market's catalog of wares, all for sale in a boisterous, welcoming atmosphere. The surrounding area can be a bit sketchy, but the sights and flavors more than make up for the journey downtown.

They are very friendly and happily offer you fruit to try, but then you are practically forced to buy something from them.
And this is when the fun starts, they tried to charge us 150 R$/kilo of fruit, about 25 EUR or 28 USD!!!
Their price are 20 times normal supermarket prices.

Normal price would be no more than 10 R$/kilo.

A great market to go and try out local food and see the types of meat & fish locals buy. Local food to try is the mortadella sandwich, a pastel, chopp (draft) beer, and more. There is also a great place to try some local craft beer under the mezzanine.
Only reason it’s not a 5* place is because of the fruit vendors who try to scam you for the smallest amount of fruit you buy. They start off all friendly, giving you various (delicious) samples, but then charge you a ridiculous amount. For some strawberries, 2 “kiwi-bananas”, 2 cherimoyas (custard apples), and a few other pieces of fruit I can’t remember the names of, the vendor tried to charge us BR$267 ~ £42 ~ US$50. So be careful of these fruit vendors - especially Barraca do Juca!

Lots of food vendors selling fruits, nuts, meats, etc. Make sure you understand the price first. Some vendors have incredibly high prices for things. They may say its imported, but its still too expensive, so just be careful. Ask for the price and insist on it.

Stop by a restaurant - I like the ones upstairs, and have a mortadella sandwich. If it has a X in front of it that means with cheese. X-tudo means cheese and everything.

Enjoy! It's worth a visit.

Busy area with lots of other shops and noise outside the building. My husband did get charged more for buying fruit, being gringos, be careful, even when they weigh in front of you. Taste it, dont buy it. Worth going for a look and getting food to eat. Not worth visiting twice base on our experience.

Vendors approach aggressively in a way almost intimidating. Once it became a turist spot fruit became extremely expensive. The tradicional belloni sandwich is ridiculous expensive and lost quality of times ago. As a local it is sad tô me see this place in theese conditions. They may full foreigners but not people who live here. Shame on that.

Fun experience in a large city food market set in a beautiful old building. We were told to keep our iPhones inside our pockets for fear of being mugged however I didn't get this impression at all. I think you just have to be smart about usage. The fresh and exotic fruit stands are a fun stop as the sales people offer you a wide variety of fresh and exotic fruits to sample with hopes you'll wind up purchasing. Be careful however as the fruits are so darn good, you'll wind up what I did in buying $100 of fruit - however every bite is a burst of flavor so it's well worth it. They sell the fruit in various sizes and I wound up getting the larger plate which turned out to be $110. There are meat stands. nuts, beverages and a wide variety of other shopping stalls. It can get pretty crowded so keep an eye on your friends, family and belongings. Uber easy in/out through clearly marked door numbers to make meeting your ride much easier. Plenty of security guards are located all around so again I felt totally safe.

Love going to the Mercadao Municipal when we visit Sao paulo the atmosphere is fantastic always get some Carolina reaper sauce of death from our favourite stall, loads of weird and wonderful fruits and nuts to sample and a simple nao obrigado (no thankyou) with a smile is enough never experienced any pressure sales pitch and everything is priced. Make sure you go upstairs to Horca for a choppe (beer) and a pastel which is huge so are the sandwiches delicious. Don't be scared go with it and enjoy the experience, the fish market is the only bit to avoid it's a bit smelly 😜

The Mercado is the best place to experience the full array of foods, fruits and vegetables available in Brazil. It does get crowded on the weekends and you do need to keep an eye on wallet and cell phone security around the crowds. Even more so if you visit shops on the surrounding streets. If you have time to eat, go upstairs in the main building and brave the lines to get a table in one of the restaurants. Recommend a mortadella sandwich or a pastel to go with your chopp.

Beware of the fruit vendors, I wanted to pick up some fruit and they were giving out samples. The samples were great, so I decided to but a few pieces. The seller was super friendly and was picking out something "ripe", but picked out the most unripe fruit and then when I got home and looked at the charge it was obscene. It was from a stand called Hugo Mederos Silva. I expected it to be more than the store, it was 1 custard apple, 6 strawberry, 1 kiwi, and 1 tangerine and he charged my card $261 R $50 USD. The listed prices were no where near what I was charged. It's a shame that there scamming people that visit, I love to support local vendors but this just left a sour unripe taste in my mouth. I hope that $50 was worth the Karma that's coming. I would say avoid his stand. I am sure the majority are honest.

This is a really good market, however it is very busy, especially if you stupidly go there at lunch time !!!

I misjudged it, and consequently had to wait a long time for food, but that was my oversight. If I had had longer here I would have gone back again at a slightly less busy time to be able to really appreciate the place. The whole area was very busy, bustling, people selling from shops and the pavements.

This was one of the nicest markets I have been to and I have been to quite a few !!
