Came to Veliko Tarnovo mostly just to see this, and was not disappointed. A historic place from a time that isn't much in evidence in other major Bulgarian cities (despite a certain historical focus on the Bulgarian Empire in museums etc). You buy a ticket just outside the gate, but once you're inside you can wander to your heart's content.... More

This fortress is not very large but it is a dramatic moat-surrounded fortress which is like the gem of Veliko Tarnovo. It is composed of a hilly area surrounded by its fortress walls. Historically, this geographical location was an ideal place for defence against foreign invaders as the moat is deep down below and not one which can easily be... More

This is a must-see when you travel to Bulgaria. Even though it was raining when I visited, the experience was awesome. I would recommend reading up on the history so you get a better understanding of the historic importance of this amazing place

A Middle Age fortress, very well preserved and restored. Fantastic views over landscape and Veliko Tarnovo. Residence of all Bulgarian Tzars. The quintessence of Bulgarian Middle ages.

Walls and stones. Some presentations audibles in different languages would go fine. Lacking the story behind the stones.

Very nice preserved/reconstructed fortress... The access is very easy and the view over the Veliko Tarnovo city is astonishing... At least us we weren't able to find any leaflet or brochure to describe in details about the place history...

A big and impressive fortress, but the church on top of it is a very disappointing peace of modern art.

there is no parking here so a good walk before the walk. the entry fee is minimal and the walks are rough so a little sketchy on a rainy day. There is not a lot of restoration so take your time to read the signs and learn the history of this real medieval town. The surrounding hills were also not... More
