Kakku Pagodas, is a must see when you are in Inle Lake area, or Taungyi. Its a good 1 hour drive from Taungyi and a 2 hour drive from Nyaung Shwe. It's a fabulous destination. More than 2000 pagodas of which not one seems the same have been built over a vast area. Their condition is good and a lot of them a a metal sphere on top with little bells. So if you walk up into the area it gives a very spirtual atmosphere while the wind is moving the little bells in lovely angelic sounds.
Photographers will find this a heavenly site. I must say I did not immerse myself enough in the spirituality of the place as I was too focussed on making great photos.
As we went just recently i would like to share with you that the place is open; you are asked to wear a mask; and there is no need to bring a guide. So the rule that it was mandatory to take a guide from Taungyi is not longer. You can just take a car/taxi and go as you please. We stopped in Taungyi and went to the market and met a lot of the lovely dressed Pa O women which was a feast for our eyes.
We stayed at Inle lake, Nyaung Shwe at Thanaka hotel, which is a lovely place, which I can recommend for all kinds of travelers. It;s a very child friendly hotel as well. We experienced some rainfall, but definitely not all the time. Overall very enjoyable to spend some days at the lake.

Quite extraordinary, and something to marvel at. You can wander round, discovering new things for a couple of hours at least.

We really enjoyed visiting the pagodas - well worth the expense and the journey. It’s quite far out but definitely a must see here, we found this to be more memorable than any of the lake tours and things like that and so definitely a highlight when visiting Inle. We would recommend the same taxi service that many have recommended on here as the price was fair and he basically was a guide as well, willing to stop anywhere and take photos and was generally helpful. He also came exactly on time as we discussed and arranged the service at such short notice (literally the night before) so was very much appreciated!

This was first time I’ve been in Shan State, Myanmar.
I arrived in Nyaung Shwe early morning by bus from Mandalay. I checked in at a hotel and then went to Kakku Complex of Stupas and Inle Lake.
After 2-hour driving, I got to Kakku. As I visited in early morning, there’s no people but me. Over 2000 stupas and the landscape of rice fields behind the complex were so fantastic that I can’t describe them in words!

When I arrived in Nyaung Shwe, I dropped my wallet in the bus. But my driver called the bus company and find my wallet immediately. His name is Mr. Kokyaw. He is very kind and speaks English well.
He can customize your trip according to your schedule and interest. I highly recommend him.

A beautiful set of stupas, restored almost too completely compared to the more natural, deteriorated state of the lower part of Indein stupas but if you are a fan of these types of sites, it is worth the long day trip from Inle. The sound of the chimes overhead in the light wind is very nice. Take photos from refelection pond in lower front right of complex as you enter or lower left as you leave. Gorgeous.
Restaurant at entrance good for lunch.

As part of a day tour of Inle Lake, we stopped at the village of Indein. We had no idea that this pagoda complex existed. It is breath taking. If you are in the area you must visit this place. It is astonishing.

The best place to visit in Myanmar. The 2.5 hour drive each way is well worth it. The lovely pinks, yellows, browns and whites of the 2000 + stupas are beautiful. The wind chimes are calming.

A couple of hours there and then back again, is it worth the trip? I would say yes, because it is so unique. In a way it is a shame that the pagodas are largely restored - I liked the Shwe Inn Thein pagodas near Indein (Inle Lake) better.

Tip: Wander into the pagodas away from the walkways and try to find a quiet spot without tourists, then all you will hear are wind ringing the bells on top of the pagodas.

The restaurant opposite is a nice spot for lunch.

If you found my review helpful I would appreciate your vote.

A spectacular sight visiting the Kakku pagodas, a square kilometre containing 2,478 stupas which are believed to have been commissioned as far back as 2,000 years ago. The original pagoda collection was extended in the 12th century and many more were added in the 17th and 18th centuries. The site has been restored extensively, although not necessarily authentically or skilfully and, in recent years, has suffered destruction from extreme weather and earthquakes. This does not impede our experience. We spent over an hour just wandering around this magnificent and ancient religious monument of the Pa’O people, which has not seen tourist until 2011. Yet another highlight of our trip and highly recommended.

We needed many hours in the past to drive to this nice place - now the roads are better there is a good restaurant and thanks to the new road - Kakku is becoming more and more popular with visitors from INLE lake.
The Pa O tribe owns the grounds and they have now also a hotel ready at this place.
It is no longer a hidden treasure but it is much better then Indein cluster of pagodas. Well maintained .Worth a visit, for sure
