Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stopped at this pagoda while visiting Inle Lake, and I'm so glad we did. This beautiful, slightly understated pagoda is to honor Buddhism, and the gold Buddhas are absolutely stunning. It's an imposing, sacred pagoda where you can really feel the spirituality of what the Buddhas represent.

The five small buddha images have been covered in so much gold leaf over time, they are somewhat formless and are more like golden potatoes to the uninitiated (no disrespect intended) - see my photos. In the back right hand corner on the wall are some very old photos of how they used to look, so that helps give some context. Still an interesting place to observe the Burmese pilgrims, but the pagoda itself (should be called a temple since you can go inside?) is nothing special.

We visited this large pagoda complex as part of our day on the water at Inle. It is where the royal holy barge is stored. You can visit it in ot's own opensided boat house beside the pagoda.
The buddhas in the centre of the pagoda are so revered that they are wearing the GNP of a small country, I think, in gold leaf and consequently are totally unrecognisable. You can see how they used to look in old photos on a side wall. Turns out the Greeks were right about ' nothing in excess'!

This is Inle lake’s main shrine. It holds five Buddhas that are now unrecognisable under interminable layers of lumpy gold leaf.

Located in the floating village of Taunggyi, his temple is at the intersection of two main canals. Surrounded by market stalls you can’t miss this large tiered Pagoda. Like most Burmese temples you’ll need to remove your shoes and have bare shoulders and legs covered before you head up the stairs. There is a K300 camera fee, which isn’t worth it. The central shrine is located in a large relatively unadorned room. The centrepiece of the shrine are five amorphous gold blobs - at one stage they were Buddha images but have been covered with so many layers of gold leaf they are unrecognisable. Only males are allowed to get close to the relics and apply the gold leaf but you can view them on one of the four large flat screen televisions above the shrine. In one of the corners of the room is a series of old photographs which give you an idea of what the images originally looked like.
If you get the chance on the other side of the canals is a large shed housing the ornate barges used to transporting the images around the lake during the Paung Daw Oo festival in October, worth visiting.

The pagoda is large but uninspiring. The boat leaves you off right at the entrance where you take off your shoes which is interesting but the interior is nothing to rave about.
We saw many kids playing and other people seating there.

Another beautiful pagoda with all the trimmings. Nearby is the spectacular ceremonial boat. Shame about the Buddhas gold gilded out of shape.

This pagoda houses five highly eroded images of the Buddha which are no more than small rounded lumps covered in gold at this point. However, because of the formlessness, it was nice to sit and contemplate perhaps a deeper mystery of religion and spirituality.
Women are not allowed to go to the inner area near the Buddhas to place gold leaf, but men - even tourists - can buy a leaf and place it on one of the images. The pagoda itself is large and modern and doesn't have much to recommend it.
Nearby on the premises is the golden barge that is used to take the images out on a grand lake-wide 18-day parade each October.

Hpaung Daw U Pagoda is a must see while you are on the Inle lake. It is the most revered Pagoda in the region, so if you're a buddhist, it's a plus. The 5 buddha statues have had so many gold leaf offerings by men that the original shapes of the buddhas cannot be seen anymore. History has it that the 5 buddha statues, while parading on a boat on the lake, sank to the bottom of the lake, but was later found back at the Pagoda. On the same compound of the pagoda, there is a market inside the building selling tourist souvenirs as well. Don't miss this place while you're on Inle Lake!

I was wondering what the Golden Blobs were about until I read some of the reviews here. This Pagoda is part of the itinerary for the day tours on Inle Lake. There is also a local market nearby which makes an interesting visit. There is a small camera fee for the pagoda and they will give you a postcard for the fee. Feed the pigeons at the entrance of the pagoda. There are also vendors selling crackers for feeding the seagulls on the lake.
